Over 2.5 (-250), Under 2.5 (+200)
Augsburg is welcoming Borussia Dortmund to WWK Arena in part of round 18 of German Bundesliga.
Augsburg has been solid so far this season and is now in 10th place in Bundesliga standings with 23 points from 17 games. Augsburg has lost only 1 of their last 10 games and has been scoring a lot of goals during that stretch. In their last 6 Bundesliga games, Augsburg has scored 15 goals, while conceding only 7 goals. In their last Bundesliga game before Christmas break against Leipzig, Augsburg was by far the weakest team in this matchup. Augsburg had only 26% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, and extremely low 60% of the correct passes. Augsburg has lost this game 3-1, but nobody expected that Augsburg can go toe to toe with one of the best teams in Bundesliga this season. Augsburg has scored 27 goals so far this season which is solid for a team in the middle of the table. Niederlechner has score 8 of those 27 goals, while Max added 6 goals. Niederlechner also has 6 assists and has been Augsburg’s best player this season. Gruezo, Suchy, Goetze, Finnbogason, and Framberger are all injured, and coach Schmidt will not have them at his disposal. Augsburg doesn’t play overly attractive soccer, and their strongest part should be their defense, but unfortunately for Augsburg, said defense is not working as it should. I think that Augsburg has the quality to stay right here where they are in the Bundesliga table, but I don’t see them ending up any higher.
Borussia Dortmund needed this Christmas break probably more than any other team in Bundesliga because they were not playing good soccer in December, especially on the defensive end. Borussia is 4th in the Bundesliga standings with 30 points, 7 points less than Leipzig at the top. Offensively, Borussia is one of the most talented teams in Europe, and now they signed Norwegian superstar Erling Braut Haland from Red Bull Salzburg, another attacking threat to Borussia’s opponents. In their last Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim just before the Christmas break, Borussia had 52% of ball possession, 8 corner kicks, 5 shots on goal, and 86% of the correct passes. It was a solid game for Borussia where they had the lead from the 17th minute, but once again Borussia’s defense made some stupid mistakes and, in the end, Dortmund lost this match 2-1 by two late goals. Delaney, Schmelzer, and Witsel are injured and will not be in the lineup for this game. Sancho and Reus have both scored 9 goals for Dortmund so far this season, while Sancho also added 9 assists. Borussia is also playing in the Champions League, and in the first round of the knockouts, they will play against PSG in what is promising to be one of the most interesting matchups in the Top 16. It’s always fun to watch Borussia playing because the players are having fun, at least in the attacking part. The defense is something coach Favre must improve fast if Borussia wants to have a shot in beating another offensive firepower, PSG. Before the season started, I was hoping that Borussia can take the title away from Bayern, but halfway through the season, I think that Leipzig has better chances to accomplish that.
Augsburg has barely had any success against Borussia Dortmund, whether they play at home or away from home. In the last 8 games played between Augsburg and Borussia, both teams have scored at least 1 goal. I think there will be goals here, but Borussia will win this match.
