Aston Villa is welcoming Manchester City to Villa Park in round 22 of the English Premier League.

Aston Villa has been hot and cold so far this season, but for now, they are outside the relegation zone, in 17th place with 21 points. Aston Villa has been solid offensively with 27 scored goals, but their defense hasn’t been good, and they conceded 37 goals. Villa hasn’t won any of their last 2 games, but those games were in FA Cup and in the EFL Cup. In their latest EPL game against Burnley away from home, Aston Villa had only 39% of ball possession, 6 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, and 69% of the correct passes. This wasn’t a good game for Aston Villa, but despite that, they were able to win 1-2 and bring three precious points home. Jack Grealish is the leading goal scorer for Aston Villa with 6 goals and 5 assists, while Wesley added 5 goals. Aston Villa is basically the field hospital at the moment with Steer, McGinn, Target, Wesley, Heaton, Davis, and Kodjia all injured which is a massive blow for coach Dean Smith. Aston Villa got promoted to EPL this season after ending up in 5th place in the Championship last season, but if they want to keep their EPL status for next season, Aston Villa must play better soccer on the defensive end. I know that it’s hard for coach Smith to change or improve something with all the injuries, but something must change because Bournemouth and Watford who are Villa’s first competitors are playing better and better.

Manchester City has been waking up as of late and their defense is improving. Manchester City has won their last 4 games in the EPL, FA Cup, and EFL Cup. City is in 3rd place in the EPL standings with 44 points, 14 points less than Liverpool at the top, and 1 point less than Leicester City in second place. With 56 scored goals, Manchester City is the best offensive team in England, and one of the best in Europe. Sterling has scored 11 of those 56 goals for Manchester City, Aguero added 10 goals, while Jesus has 8 goals. Kevin De Bruyne who is Manchester’s best player so far has 13 assists. The injury list in Manchester City is slowly clearing up and only Sane and Laporte are left on it. Manchester City is playing some of the best soccer in England and in Europe, soccer with high ball possession, high pressure, a lot of short passes, and a lot of patience, it’s a style that coach Guardiola wants his every team playing. Most of the time this kind of soccer-style is unbeatable, however, it doesn’t work always. I think that everyone in Manchester City has calmed with a fact that they will not defend the EPL title because Liverpool is 14 points ahead of them, and instead Manchester City will focus on the Champions League. Manchester City will play against Real Madrid in the Champions League in late February, and I think their form is on a rise just in time to reach the peak before the Champions League starts. I’m liking the City’s odds in this matchup against Real Madrid and will be on their side.

Aston Villa hasn’t won any of their last 7 games against Manchester City. Aston Villa is 4-2-4 at home this season, while Manchester City is 6-1-3 away from home. Even without all the injuries, I would never side with Aston Villa. Manchester City is the much better team here, with more quality and more depth. The price on Manchester City is not great, for that reason I decided to take a bit more risk here.
