Southampton is hosting Tottenham in round 21 of the English Premier League at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton was finally able to string a few good results together and has won 7 points in their last 3 games. In their last EPL game versus Crystal Palace, Southampton was a much better team with 59% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 12 corner kicks, and 81% of accurate passes. This match ended in a 1-1 draw which was certainly a disappointment for Southampton because they played good soccer in this match. After a disastrous start of the season, Southampton has climbed the EPL standings and is now in 15th place with 22 points, 24 scored goals, and massive 38 conceded goals. Southampton is a solid team and their striker Danny Ings is playing in the best form of his life this season. Ings has scored 12 goals so far, while Ward-Prowse added 4 goals and 2 assists. Valery is the only injured player for Southampton while Shane Long should be ready for this match. The biggest problem for coach Hassenhuttl is his defense of course because the 98 conceded goals in inexcusable. Other problem for Southampton lies in their attacking line and a lack of support for Danny Ings. Players like Redmond, Adamas, and Long will have to get into goal scoring form is Southampton wants to stay outside the relegation zone, or even climb a few spots in the EPL table. Southampton is actually playing better away from home than in front of their fans this season and that is something coach Hassenhuttl must improve as soon as possible.
Tottenham has really ruined my day this past weekend in a game against the worst team in the EPL, Norwich. In that match, Tottenham had 59% of ball possession, 7 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, and 81% of accurate passes. Tottenham was losing twice in this game, 1-0, and 2-1, but they were able to tie the game in 83rd minute from a penalty spot. I get that sometimes there is so much that coach can do, but I feel that Mourinho should have made some tactical changes at half time and not waited until the 60th minute. Don’t get me wrong, Tottenham is playing much better soccer since Mourinho arrived, but that is still pretty far from the team that played in the Champions League finals last season. Tottenham is 6th in the EPL standings with 30 points, 36 scored goals, and 29 conceded goals. Kane has scored 11 goals so far for Tottenham, and as their captain, Kane must pull this team forward. Alli is playing better and better with every game and has scored 6 goals so far. Son added 7 assists, but he is still suspended due to a red card. Lloris and Davies are both injured. I’m not a Mourinho fan, but I can’t deny that he is the master in motivating his players and getting the best out of them, and that is something Tottenham’s players need right now. Tottenham is close to the fourth place in the EPL that is leading to Champions League, but there is plenty of games left for them to show us that Tottenham deserves to be in the top four in the EPL.
Away team hasn’t won in any of the last 6 games between Southampton and Tottenham, while there were at least 2 scored goals in the last 10 games between Southampton and Tottenham. I don’t think that Southampton can stay unbeaten for 4 games in a row, and Tottenham will be eager to bounce back from a draw against the worst team in the EPL. The price on Tottenham is too good to pass.
