Sevilla takes on Inter Milan in the UEFA Europa League final from the RheinEnergieStadion on Friday afternoon.
Sevilla comes into this match, their sixth Europa League final, the most out of any side in the tournament’s history, after picking up a stunning 2-1 win over Manchester United in their semi-final matchup. In the win over Manchester United, Sevilla fell behind in the 9th minute when United converted from the penalty spot, and the lead held until Suso tied the game at one for Sevilla in the 26th minute. The tie held well into the second half, where Luuk de Jong struck for Sevilla to give the Spanish side a 2-1 lead that despite United’s best efforts, with 56% possession and 4 shots on target in the second half, would not cut into the rest of the way as Sevilla marched on and secured their spot in the final.
Inter Milan on the other hand play in their first Europa League final since lifting the trophy in 1997 by virtue of taking down Shakhtar Donetsk in the semi-finals in a 5-0 beatdown victory. In the win over Shakhtar, Lautaro Martinez gave Inter the lead in the 19th minute and that goal held up until Danilo D’Ambrosio doubled Inter’s advantage in the 64th minute. Martinez pushed the lead to 3-0, securing his brace in the 74th minute before Romelu Lukaku got on the board in the 78th to make it 4-0 and completed a brace of his own in the 84th minute, giving Inter a mammoth 5-0 lead that Shakhtar could only watch and play out the final six-plus minutes of the match for pride as Inter pushed Donetsk aside and advanced to the title game.
This is a hard one to call as Sevilla’s been in fantastic form for the last few months while Inter Milan’s been on a decent run themselves. With that said, we saw against Shakhtar Donetsk how truly powerful this Inter Milan forward line can be with Martinez and Lukaku leading the charge and while Sevilla had the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid to deal with, the fact is that Inter poses a tough task unlike anything Sevilla is used to. I’ll side with Inter Milan to win this one in 90 minutes for the slight plus money here.
