FC Cincinnati and DC United meet in MLS action from Nippert Stadium on Friday night.
FC Cincinnati come into this one looking to build on a decent showing in the MLS is Back tournament, after opening with a 4-0 loss to rival Columbus Crew, Cincinnati shut out Atlanta United and the New York Red Bulls on the way to a 2-0-1 record and a spot in the knockout rounds. Cincinnati’s stay in the playoff rounds was short though as Cincinnati lost to eventual champion Portland in a penalty shootout in the round of 16. Yuya Kubo leads Cincinnati in scoring with a pair of goals while Frankie Amaya, Allan Cruz and Jurgen Locadia each have a goal this season. Adrien Regattin leads Cincinnati with a pair of assists while Brandon Vazquez has an assist as well this year. Przemyslaw Tyton is the top goalkeeper for Cincinnati, conceding 1.33 goals per 90 minutes with two clean sheets in three league appearances this season.
DC United on the other hand, come into this one fairly rested after a short stay in the MLS is back tournament, posting a 0-2-1 record. DC United posted a hard-fought rally draw against Toronto FC in their opener before drawing New England and falling to the Montreal Impact on their final group stage matchday. Frederic Brilliant and Federico Higuain each have a pair of goals while Russell Canouse and Yamil Asad each have a goal as well for DC this season. Steve Birnbaum, Felipe and Julian Gressel all have an assist for DC United while Bill Hamid is the top goaltender for DC United, conceding 1.4 goals per 90 minutes this season.
There’s not much history to go off of for this head-to-head, as last year was the only reference we had and Cincinnati were god awful last year. However, Cincinnati has started to turn things around as it was evident in the MLS is Back tournament, and DC United is always a potent threat in front of goal. I think we see some goals here between two sides that can score that also have some shaky goaltending, so give me the over here.
