The New York Red Bulls play host to NYCFC meet in another installment of the Hudson River Derby in MLS action from Red Bull Arena on Thursday.
The New York Red Bulls come into this one rested after having a short stay in the MLS is Back tournament, finishing with a 1-0-2 record after starting their tournament with a win over Atlanta United, but followed that up with back-to-back 2-0 losses to Columbus Crew and FC Cincinnati, resulting in an early departure from the tournament as one of the two 3rd place teams to be bounced from the tournament. Florian Valot is one of five Red Bulls with a goal this season while also leading New York with a pair of assists. David Jensen is the top goalkeeper for the Red Bulls, conceding 1.4 goals per 90 minutes with one clean sheet in five appearances this season.
New York City FC on the other hand, come into this one after a decent run in the tournament, finishing with an equal 1-0-2 record, losing to the Philadelphia Union and Orlando City in their first two games before taking down Inter Miami in the final group stage matchup to advance to the knockout rounds as one of the four top 3rd place teams. NYCFC took down league runner-up Toronto FC in the round of 16 before falling to the eventual champion Portland Timbers in the quarter-finals. Jesus Medina leads the charge up front for NYCFC, posting a pair of goals in the tournament while Sean Johnson takes charge in the NYCFC goal, giving up 1.2 goals per 90 minutes with one clean sheet in five league appearances this season.
This is a hard one to call as NYCFC went deeper in the tournament, but both teams had the same record, it was just a bad draw that the Red Bulls got bounced from the tournament the way they did. The home team’s gone unbeaten in the last seven head-to-head league fixtures between the two sides, and we’ve also seen both teams score five times as well. I’m going to ride those trends and back New York Red Bulls to win with both teams to score as my pick for this game.
