Manchester City takes on Lyon in a Champions League quarter-final matchup from the Estadio Jose Alvarado on Saturday afternoon.
Manchester City comes into this game fresh off of the heels of a 2-1 win over Real Madrid to book their spot in the Champions’ League quarterfinals for the 3rd time in their last 4 seasons. In the win over Real Madrid, Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for the Citizens in the 9th minute but Real would tie the game at one goal apiece in the 28th minute. The game would remain deadlocked until Gabriel Jesus bailed out Manchester City in the 68th minute to give them a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way. City, statistically owned the Citizens for this one, boasting 54% possession with 21 attempts at goal and 9 shots on target to Real’s 46% possession, 9 shots at goal and 4 shots on target. Sterling leads Man City in scoring with 31 goals across all competitions while Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero each have 23 goals across all coms with Jesus added 11 assists. Kevin De Bruyne has a team-high 22 assists as well as 15 goals on the year. Ederson is City’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.82 goals per 90 minutes with 18 clean sheets in 43 appearances across all competition this season.
Lyon on the other hand, punched their ticket to the quarters by virtue of a 2-1 loss to Juventus, but Lyon advanced due to a tiebreaker for away goals. In the loss to Juventus, Memphis Depay gave Lyon a massive goal from the penalty spot in the 12th minute but Juventus would tie the game at one with a spot kick of their own in the 43rd. Juventus would take the lead on the hour mark, but that’s as good as it would get as Juventus won the battle after 90 minutes, but would lose the war as Depay’s goal would get Lyon through on aggregate by away goals. Moussa Dembele leads Lyon in scoring with 22 goals along with 6 assists while Memphis Depay has 15 goals and Houssem Aouar has a team-high 9 assists across all competitions this season. Anthony Lopez is Lyon’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.09 goals per 90 minutes with 13 clean sheets in 39 appearances across all competitions this season.
With all due respect to Lyon, they haven’t looked great even in being competitive in their last couple of matches, and a spot kick saved their season as Lyon wouldn’t have qualified otherwise it looks like. I just think Manchester City is ticked off right now, as they have been for months, and I just think that this is a bad spot for Lyon as City is not a team I’d want to step in front of right now. Give me Man City with the -1.5 handicap in this one.
