Atalanta take on PSG in the first leg of a UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie from the Estadio da Luz on Wednesday afternoon.
Atalanta come into this match having finished the Serie A season with a second straight 3rd place finish, tied with Lazio on 78 points and securing Champions Legue football for next season, which will be their second appearance in the tournament after this, their maiden voyage in the tournament. Atalanta came into the restart hot with six straight wins post-hiatus, but would alternate wins and draws over their next sic games making it a 12-game unbeaten run before losing to Inter Milan on the final matchday to secure 3rd in Serie A. Josip Ilicic leads Atalanta in scoring across all competitions with 21 goals but is expected to miss this game due to injury. Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel each have 19 goals while Mario Pasalic has 11 goals and Robin Gosens has 10 goals for Atalanta this season. Alejandro Gomez has a team-high 18 assists across all comps while Marco Sportiello will start in goal as Pierluigi Gollini, who started 41 matches with 10 clean sheets across all competitions, will mis the next two months with a knee injury.
PSG on the other hand, have had some time as well to get back into game shape after Ligue 1 was called at the end of February with PSG lifting the trophy in the shortened season. Since them PSG beat St. Etienne in the Coupe de France and took down Lyon in the Coupe de la Ligue before coming into this one. Kylian Mbappe led PSG in scoring with 20 goals across all competitions with 13 assists while Mauro Icardi had 20 goals and Neymar had 19 goals with 9 assists. Pablo Sarabia had 14 goals and Angel Di Maria had 12 goals with a team-high 20 assists across all competitions, but Di Maria will miss this this one due to a yellow card accumulation. Keylor Navas is PSG’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.72 goals per 90 minutes with 19 clean sheets in 33 starts across all competitions this season.
This should be an entertaining matchup, as Atalanta were two goals from breaking the century mark of 100 goals in the Serie A campaign while we all know the firepower that PSG brings to the table. I don’t think Atalanta’s offensive prowess can be overlooked, but I am a bit concerned about their chances without Gollini in goal. Instead of trying to pick a side, I’m going to side with the over. I think goals are going to come in bunches in this matchup and as such, I’ll take the over 3 goals as my pick for this game.
