Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Basel square off in a UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg from the Veltins Arena on Tuesday.
Shakhtar Donetsk come into this one having booked their spot in the quarters with a 3-0 win over Wolfsburg in their last game, making it a 5-1 win on aggregate over the two legs. The first half was squeaky clean between the two, with no cards and no bookings. Shakhtar were reduced to ten men when Davit Khocholava was shown a straight red card for a trip in the 68th minute and things would level off there as well just two minutes later when Wolfsburg would have a sending off of their own. We looked headed for a scoreless tie, but Donetsk would want to secure the result, scoring three goals in four minutes to surge ahead 3-0 out of nowhere. Junior Moraes opened the scoring in the 89th, before Manor Solomon made it 2-0 in the first minute of second-half stoppage time and Moraes completed his brace just two minutes after that to forge ahead 3-0 and put the fixture far out of reach for Wolfsburg, and seeing Donetsk advance. Moraes leads Shakhtar with 25 goals and 10 assists across all competitions while Marlos has 13 goals and Taison has 10 goals and 9 assists. Andriy Pyatov is Shakhtar’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.8 goals across all competitions with 12 clean sheets in 33 matches this season.
FC Basel on the other hand, booked their spot by virtue of a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt to take the tie 4-0 on aggregate. The first half of the win against Eintracht saw no scoring but one booking per side and the second half was clean as well for the most part but Basel would secure the result in the match and in the two-leg fixture with a goal in the 88th minute from Fabian Frei to take a 1-0 lead that Basel wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way. Arthur leads Basel in scoring with 16 goals while the aforementioned Frei has 15 goals and 8 assists across all competitions. Kemal Ademi has 13 goals while Valentin Stocker has 10 goals and 10 assists for Basel this year. Jonas Omlin leads Basel in goal, conceding 0.9 goals per 90 minutes with 16 clean sheets in 39 matches across all competitions this season.
Basel and the heavy plus money would be worth a look, but the Swiss outfit has scored just one goal across their last three competitions, including two draws in the domestic league and I hate to break it to Basel supporters, but Thun and Luzern aren’t on the level of Shakhtar Donetsk. Donetsk are unbeaten in their last ten competitive matches across all competitions, scoring two or more goals in eight of those games. I think we could be in store for another offensive clinic from Shakhtar here, so I’ll back Donetsk at home with the over 1.5 goals to get the wager into plus money since scoring hasn’t been an issue for the hosts as of late.
