Inter Milan and Bayer Leverkusen meet in a UEFA Europa League quarter-final matchup from the Merkur-Spiel Arena on Monday afternoon.
Inter Milan comes into this game looking to build off of their single leg victory over Getafe in the round of 16 last time out. In the 2-0 win over Getafe, Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring for Inter in the 33rd minute as the only action of the first half while Getafe had a golden opportunity to tie the game at one in the second half but Getafe would miss from the penalty spot, allowing Inter to hold onto the lead before driving the dagger in with a second goal in the 83rd minute of play as Getafe would be sent packing by Inter. Lukaku leads Inter in scoring with 30 goals across all competitions while Lautaro Martinez has 19 goals and Alexis Sanchez has a team-high 9 assists in all comps for Inter this season. Samir Handanovic is Inter Milan’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.98 goals per 90 minutes with 15 clean sheets in 45 appearances in all competitions this year.
Bayer Leverkusen punched their ticket to the quarters by virtue of a 4-1 win on aggregate over Rangers following a 1-0 win over the Scottish outfit last matchday. In the win over Rangers, The first half saw a pair of bookings that went Leverkusen’s way but no scoring came until the 51st minute where Moussa Diaby fired one home to give Bayer the lead. Rangers would put some pressure on for an equalizer in the second half, but the goal never came as Rangers failed to log a shot on target, leaving Bayer to advance comfortably on aggregate. Kai Havertz leads Bayer Leverkusen in scoring with 17 goals across all competitions as well as 9 assists while Kevin Volland and Lucas Alario each have 12 goals and Karim Demirbay has a team-high 10 assists across all comps this season. Lukas Hradecky is Bayer Leverkusen’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.27 goals per 90 minutes with 14 clean sheets in 49 appearances for Leverkusen this season.
Bayer Leverkusen has a more comfortable environment with this game being played in Germany, but there aren’t any fans to make the trip for Leverkusen to give even the slightest advantage to Bayer. Inter finished their domestic season with three straight wins and carried that over to their Europa tie with Getafe and I just think that Inter’s in a better spot to get the job done and win this tie. I’ll side with Inter ML to win this first leg.
