Juventus and Lyon square off in the second leg of a UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie from the Allianz Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Juventus come into this match looking to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Lyon in the first leg in an effort to reach the Champions League quarterfinals for the 4th straight year. Juve is coming in fresh off of their 9th consecutive Serie A title, finishing runners-up in the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa to finish two wins away from the domestic treble. Juventus clinched the title with two games to go, so they took their foot off of the gas, making the one-point finish ahead of second place Inter look a lot closer than the race actually was. Cristiano Ronaldo leads Juventus in the goal-scoring department with 35 goals across all competitions while Paulo Dybala has 17 goals and a team-high 10 assists across all comps and Gonzalo Higuain has 11 goals with 8 assists. Wojciech Szczesny is Juventus’ top goalkeeper, conceding 1.15 goals per 90 minutes with 13 clean sheets in 36 appearances across all competitions this season.
Lyon on the other hand, come in looking to advance as winning the Champions League is the only way for Lyon to ensure a spot in European competition next season, finishing 7th in Ligue 1 this past year, Lyon’s first year finishing outside of the top-5 in France’s top flight in the last 20 years. Moussa Dembele led Lyon in the goal-scoring category with 22 goals across all competitions while captain Memphis Depay has 14 goals and Houssem Aouar has 9 goals with a team-high 9 assists across all competitions for Olympique Lyonnais this year. Anthony Lopes remains Lyon’s top selection between the sticks, conceding 1.07 goals per 90 minutes with 13 clean sheets in 38 appearances across all competitions this season.
The plus money with Lyon is tempting considering Juventus finished the year losing three of their last four games, but it should be noted that Juve had clinched the title already when the last two games were being played, so there was little to play for and players were rested. With that said, Lyon has tried to keep in shape with friendly matches and a loss to PSG in the Coupe de France, but a Juventus side that’s throwing everything into this match is still a tall task after such a long layoff from fully competitive matches. I do expect a tight game here, but I’ll side with Juventus to qualify as my main bet for this match.
