Bayer Leverkusen play host to Rangers in a UEFA Europa League round of 16 second leg matchup in soccer action from the BayArena on Thursday afternoon.
Bayer Leverkusen will look to seal the deal after picking up a 3-1 advantage away in the reverse fixture back in mid-March. 2019-20 marked yet another successful campaign in Germany’s top flight, finishing 5th and missing out on Champions League soccer in the 2020-21 season, but Leverkusen did manage to secure a spot in next year’s Europa League at the very least. The problem for Leverkusen after the Bundesliga restart was stringing consistent results together as they followed up every win with a draw or a loss, resulting in dropped points that were big considering they only finished two points out of fourth at the end of the season. Kai Havertz led Leverkusen with 17 goals across all competitions while Kevin Volland and Lucas Alario each had 12 goals with Volland adding 7 assists. Kerem Demirbay also had a team-high 10 assists across all competitions this season for Bayer. Lukas Hradecky is Bayer’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.29 goals per 90 minutes with 13 clean sheets in 48 matches across all competitions this season.
Rangers on the other hand, enter this match in dire need of three away goals just to have a hope of qualifying for the next round. The good news is that Rangers had a chance to prepare by kicking off their domestic campaign with a 1-0 win over Aberdeen, starting their season on the right foot in the pursuit of a first Scottish Premiership title since 2010-11. Alfredo Morelos led Rangers in the goal-scoring department last year with 18 goals across all competitions while Jermain Defoe had 13 goals and Borna Barisic had a team-high 11 assists for Rangers last season. Allan McGregor is Rangers’ top goalkeeper, conceding 0.81 goals per 90 minutes with 17 clean sheets in 36 appearances across all competitions for Rangers last season.
This is a hard game to try to pick a side, as Bayer really just have to play to not lose, as even a draw on aggregate at 3-3 would see them through with three massive away goals. I could see this being a snooze-fest where Leverkusen just parks the bus and lets Rangers play possession so I’ll side with the under three goals as my bet for this match as I just don’t see a ton of scoring taking place.
