FC Copenhagen and Basaksehir square off in the second leg of a UEFA Europa League round of 16 matchup from the Telia Parken on Wednesday afternoon.
FC Copenhagen comes into this fixture trailing on aggregate by a 1-0 margin, but perhaps FCK’s second place finish in the Danish Superliga can spur some confidence here. The Lions started Superliga play hot, picking up 10 of a possible 12 points before a six game winless run with two draws and four defeats put them off the pace of league champions Midtjylland by 14 points even after a pair of victories to finish the year. Dame N’Doye and Pieros Sotiriou tied for the team-high with 9 goals apiece while Viktor Fischer had a team-high 8 assists for Copenhagen this season. Karl-Johan Johnsson is Copenhagen’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.21 goals per 90 minutes with 7 clean sheets in 29 league appearances this season.
Basaksehir comes into this one leading Copenhagen after the reverse fixture back in March, and are fresh off of their first Turkish Super Lig crown in club history. Basaksehir finished on 69 points with a record of 20 wins, 9 draws and 5 losses, four points clear of second-place Trabzonspor. A five-game unbeaten run after the restart with four wins was a key contributor to Basaksehir winning the league, even with a pair of defeats to lesser teams in their last three to finish the year. Edin Visca and Demba Ba tied for the team-lead with 13 goals apiece with Visca posting a team-high 12 assists as well. Mert Gunok is Basaksehir’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.94 goals per 90 minutes with 10 clean sheets in 31 league appearances this season.
This will be an interesting game to try to figure out as Copenhagen need the first goal to get back on level terms and a goal from Basaksehir would put significant pressure on Copenhagen as they would need three goals just to have a chance at advancing. The problem for Copenhagen is that Basaksehir is the better team and are riding the momentum of their first Turkish Super Lig title in club history. Copenhagen were struggling to get results at home in Europa League play earlier this year, and that was with the fans in the stands so no supporters here puts everything level and I think Basaksehir pull out a win to secure their spot in the next round.
