Spal plays host to Fiorentina in Serie A soccer action from the Stadio Paolo Mazza on Sunday afternoon.
Spal comes into this game condemned to the basement of the Serie A table, sitting in 20th on 20 points with a record of 5 wins, 5 draws and 27 losses following a 3-0 loss to Verona in their last match. In the loss to Verona, Spal fell behind in the 7th minute and then went 2-0 down just four minutes later. The deficit held for Spal into the second half where Verona made it 3-0 just two minutes into the second half and despite Spal having 55% possession in the second half and four shots on goal, they wouldn’t get on the board, leaving Verona to pick up the win and the points while Spal left empty-handed once again. Andrea Petagna leads Spal in scoring with 12 goals while Bryan Dabo has a team-high 4 assists this season.
Fiorentina on the other hand, are parked in 10th with 46 points and a record of 11 wins, 13 draws and 13 losses following a 4-0 win over Bologna in their last match. In the win over Bologna, The game only saw one yellow card in the first half which was given to Fiorentina, but the second half would be broken wide open when Federico Chiesa opened the scoring in the 48th minute and Chiesa would complete his brace just six minutes later with his second goal to push the score to 2-0. Nikola Milenkovic made it 3-0 in the 74th to put the game out of reach while Chiesa added salt in the wound in the 89th, completing his hat trick to ice the win for Fiorentina. Chiesa leads Fiorentina with 10 goals while also accruing 5 assists while Dusan Vlahovic and Erick Pulgar each have 6 goals with Pulgar having 5 assists as well. Bartlomiej Dragowski is Fiorentina’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.26 goals per 90 minutes with 8 clean sheets in 31 league appearances this season.
Part of me thinks that Spal would like to put on a show in their final Serie A game for at least a year, but there are no fans in the stands to play for, and even if there were, Spal’s been pretty much lifeless since the restart of Serie A last month. Fiorentina doesn’t have anything but pride to play for, but pride will ensure that the Viola do not lose to the worst team in Serie A this season. I’ll side with Fiorentina to win with the -1.5 handicap here.
