Newcastle plays host to Liverpool in EPL soccer action from St. James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
Newcastle comes into this match in 13th place on 44 points with a record of 11 wins, 11 draws and 15 losses following a scoreless draw with Brighton in their last match. In the draw against Brighton, the first half saw a total of three bookings, two of which went Brighton’s way, while Newcastle were held to just 32% possession and no shots on goal. The second half was a bit more een but Newcastle still found the target just once and could find the back of the net, but Brighton didn’t get on the board either, leaving the points to be shared at the full time whistle. Jonjo Shelvey leads Newcastle in scoring with 6 goals while Allan Saint-Maximin and Andy Carroll each have a team-high 4 assists this season. Martin Dubravka is Newcastle’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.3 goals per 90 minutes with 11 clean sheets in 37 league appearances this season.
Liverpool on the other hand, sit atop the table as the champions with 96 points and a record of 31 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses following a 5-3 win over Chelsea last time out. In the win over Chelsea, Naby Keita opened the scoring in the 23rd minute and Chelsea would equalize in the 33rd but VAR would overturn the goal after finding a Chelsea player offside in the buildup to the goal. Trent Alexander-Arnold pushed the lead to 2-0 and Georginio Wijnaldum made it 3-0 just five minutes later. Chelsea pulled a goal back in first-half stoppage time, but Roberto Firmino would restore the three-goal lead in the 54th. Chelsea responded seven minutes after that, and got it to 4-3 in the 73rd but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would slam the door shut on any comeback, making it 5-3 in the 84th minute. Mohamed Salah leads Liverpool in scoring with 19 goals as well as logging 10 assists while Sadio Mane has 17 goals with 7 asssts and the aforementioned Alexander-Arnold has a team-high 13 assists this season.
There’s little to play for on either side if we’re being honest, as Liverpool just want to end the season on a high note and with one of the best Premier League seasons of all time, while Newcastle just want a confidence win to carry into next season. I just think Liverpool will go out with a bang here, while Newcastle fizzles out after going winless in their last five games coming into this one. Newcastle’s matches have been entertaining though, with the last six games averaging 3.5 goals per game. So with that said I’ll side with Liverpool to win and to get the price down I’ll package it with the over 2.5 goals.
