Napoli plays host to Sassuolo in Serie A soccer action from the Stadio San Paolo on Saturday afternoon.
Napoli comes into this match in 7th place on 56 points with a record of 16 wins, 8 draws and 11 losses following a 2-1 loss to Parma in their last match. In the loss to Parma, Napoli fell behind in first-half stoppage time from the penalty spot, but Lorenzo Insigne would tie the game at one with a penalty kick of his own in the 54th minute. The game looked like we were headed for a score draw, but Parma would retake the lead in the 87th minute with yet another spot kick, leaving Napoli searching for a goal that never came. Arkadiusz Milik leads Napoli in scoring with 11 goals while Dries Mertens has 9 goals with 4 assists and Insigne has 7 goals with 6 assists. Jose Callejon has a team-high 7 assists while Fabian Ruiz has 6 assists of his own as well for Napoli this season.
Sassuolo enter this match in 8th place on 48 points with a record of 13 wins, 9 draws and 13 losses following a 2-1 loss to AC Milan in their last match. In the loss to AC Milan, Sassuolo fell behind in the 19th minute but Francesco Caputo would tie the game at one for Sassuolo in the 42nd minute of play. AC Milan would restore the lead in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, and Sassuolo would be dealt another blow when Mehdi Bourabia was sent off for his second yellow card of the half. Sassuolo wouldn’t keep up with Milan’s pressure in the second half, owning just 36% possession with one shot on goal, leaving Sassuolo chasing the entire second half and ending up empty-handed at full time. Caputo leads Sassuolo in scoring with 19 goals with 7 assists while Domenico Berardi has 13 goals with 7 assists and Jeremie Boga has 11 goals this year. Andrew Consigli is Sassuolo’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.71 goals per 90 minutes with 4 clean sheets in 28 league appearances this season.
Part of me would like to give Sassuolo a fighting chance here as they’ve been one of the more impressive teams in Serie A offensively since the restart. However, there’s little left but pride to play for this season and an 8th place finish would be a huge accomplishment for Sassuolo. Napoli on the other hand need to keep pace if they’re going to have any hopes of retaking 6th place from AC Milan over the last few games, and I think at home Napoli gets the job done, but I don’t think Sassuolo’s scoring can be ignored, so I’ll side with Napoli to win and both teams to score to get the wager down into plus money.
