The New England Revolution face Toronto FC on Tuesday, July 21st at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for an MLS is Back Tournament group stage match.
New England has earned four points through their first two group stage matches thus far, as the Revolution has played well to this point. New England's defense has really stepped up in a big way, and not too many teams in this MLS is Back Tournament can say that. With scorelines like 6-2, 4-3, and 3-2, going around the MLS, New England has been quite the defensive anomaly. In the Revolution's first match, they defeated the Montreal Impact by the final score of 1-0. New England then took a 1-1 draw to DC United, therefore the Revolution has only allowed a single goal through two matches of action, which is stellar. New England will have to face fierce competition on the offensive side when they take on this Toronto FC club, a team that has scored six goals through two matches of play.
Toronto FC did not always make it look pretty, but they still walked away with four points through two matches as well. Toronto FC first took a 2-2 draw to DC United, which was an extremely disappointing result, to say the least. DC United scored two unanswered goals to tie the game in the late going, and to make it worse, DC United was down a man in the entire second half due to a red card by Junior Moreno. Toronto FC was then able to rebound and defeat the Montreal Impact via a wild score of 4-3. The goals are coming for Toronto, but the defense has to be sharper if Toronto FC has a chance in this tournament going forward.
The last time New England and Toronto FC met was August 31st of 2019, in which the two teams took a 1-1 draw.
I am going to take Toronto FC to win this match, as the stronger offense should be able to prevail in this one. New England has it in them for a victory, I surely know that. However, Toronto FC should be able to score early and often, and I am not sure New England is going to be able to answer.
