Villarreal and Eibar square off in La Liga soccer action from the Estadio de la Ceramica on Sunday afternoon.
Villarreal come into this match in 5th place on 57 points with a record of 17 wins, 6 draws and 14 losses following a 2-1 loss to Real Madrid in their last match. In the loss to Real Madrid, Villarreal fell behind in the 29th minute and the 1-0 lead would hold up until Real Madrid doubled their lead from the penalty spot in the 77th minute of play. Iborra would grab a goal back for Villarreal just six minutes later, but in the end it was too little too late as Real Madrid slammed the door shut the rest of the way, holding on for the win while Villarreal was left empty-handed. Gerard Moreno leads Villarreal in scoring with 16 goals along with 5 assists while Santi Cazorla has 11 goals with a team-high 6 assists this season. Sergio Asenjo is Villarreal’s top goaltender, conceding 1.15 goals per 90 minutes with 11 clean sheets in 34 league appearances this season.
Eibar on the other hand, comes into this one in 13th place on 32 points with a record of 11 wins, 9 draws and 17 losses following a 3-1 win over Valladolid in their last match. In the win over Valladolid, Pedro Bigas opened the scoring for Eibar in the 21st minute and Takashi Inui doubled Eibar’s lead just seven minutes later. Valladolid would pull a goal back in the 71st minute and despite their best efforts to find an equalizer, Pablo De Blasis would slam the door shut from the penalty spot in the second minute of second-half stoppage time with Eibar’s 3rd goal. Fabian Orellana leads Eibar with team-highs of 8 goals and 7 assists while Marko Dmitrovic is Eibar’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.4 goals per 90 minutes with 10 clean sheets in 35 league appearances this season.
I’m not trying to lay this kind of juice with Villarreal when they’ve locked up Europa League and Eibar has guaranteed safety so they don’t really have much to play for either. However, Villarreal can avoid having to qualify for Europa League with a point here and if you’re going to go for a point, why not go for all three. The home team’s unbeaten in the last five head-to-head with four wins, and four games have seen at leat one team held scoreless so rather than lay -200 or more, I’ll side with Villarreal to win to nil to turn the wager into nearly double my money.
