Leganes plays host to Real Madrid in La Liga soccer action from the Estadio Municipal de Butarque on Sunday afternoon.
Leganes comes into the final matchday in 18th place on 35 points with a record of 8 wins, 11 draws and 18 losses following back-to-back wins including a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in their last match. In the win over Bilbao, Leganes were given a gift when Bilbao’s goalkeeper was sent off in the 22nd minute, but Leganes had a hard time making Bilbao rue that mistake. However, Leganes finally broke through in the 79th minute off of the boot of Miguel Guerrero, and despite their best efforts, Roger Assaie gave Leganes an insurance goal to secure the win in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time. Oscar Rodriguez leads Leganes in scoring with 9 goals while Roque Mesa has a team-high 3 assists this season.
Real Madrid on the other hand, celebrated their 34th league title with a 2-1 win over Villarreal last time combined with a Barcelona loss to Osasuna. The win over Villarreal gave Madrid 86 points with a record of 26 wins, 8 draws and 3 losses. In the win over Villarreal, Karim Benzema gave Real Madrid the lead in the 29th minute and the lead would hold until Benzema completed his brace in the 77th minute from the penalty spot. Villarreal pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute, but that’s as close as Real would let them get as Madrid held on for the win. Benzema leads Real Madrid with 21 goals and 8 assists while Luka Modric has 7 assists and Sergio Ramos has 10 goals this season. Thibaut Courtois is Real Madrid’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.56 goals per 90 minutes with 18 clean sheets in 34 league appearances this season.
It’s not often that you’ll see Leganes and Real Madrid getting these close lines together, and the price with Real is worth the look as you figure Madrid will want to finish the season perfect. However, there’s literally nothing left for Madrid to play for so they can rest key players with a second leg of their Champions League matchup against Manchester City on deck in a couple of weeks. Leganes need a victory to have a chance at safety, and it doesn’t hurt that they’re unbeaten in their last four matches with four straight clean sheets to boot. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’ll take a shot with Leganes on the ML here.
