Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad square off in La Liga soccer action from the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday afternoon.
Atletico Madrid comes into this match in 3rd place on 69 points with a record of 18 wins, 15 draws and 4 losses following a 2-0 win over Getafe in their last match. In the win over Getafe, the first half saw no scoring, but Marcus Llorente would push Atletico in front in the 54th minute of play. Getafe would be held to just 33% possession in the second half, and Thomas would score in the 70th minute to push Atleti 2-0 ahead, a lead that they would ride all the way to the finish line. Alvaro Morata leads Atletico Madrid in scoring with 12 goals while Angel Correa has 5 goals and a team-high 6 assists. Jan Oblak is Atletico Madrid’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.63 goals per 90 minutes with 17 clean sheets in 37 league appearances this season.
Real Sociedad comes into this match in 6th place on 55 points with a record of 16 wins, 7 draws and 14 losses following a scoreless draw with Sevilla in their last match. In the draw with Sevilla, there was little action in the first half with the lone booking going Sevilla’s way in the first minute of first-half stoppage time. Sociedad would be held to just 33% possession in the second half, but did hold an edge of 9-5 in terms of attempts at goal and 3-2 in regards to shots on target. In the end, neither side would find the breakthrough goal, and a draw was the final result at full time. Willian Jose leads Sociedad in scoring with 11 goals on the year while Mikel Oyarzabal has 10 goals and a team-high 11 assists this season. Alexander Isak has 9 goals as well for Real Sociedad this season.
I get why Atletico Madrid would be favored here as they’re the better team on a solid run of form, but they also have nothing but final positioning to play for as they’ve guaranteed a top-4 finish and Champions League for next season. Real Sociedad has a lot more on the line with Europa League hanging in the balance, but they’ve been so inconsistent since the restart I can’t will myself to take a shot with Sociedad and the plus money. Instead, I’m going to side with the draw. A point would go a long way for Sociedad considering they own the tiebreaker with Valencia head-to-head should they be tied at the end of the season and I can see Sociedad taking a cautious approach to this match. Draws have been a big part of Atletico’s season so why not finish with one here as well. I’ll also sprinkle some side action on the correct score of 1-1 as well.
