Verona play host to Atalanta in Serie A soccer action from the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi on Saturday morning.
Verona enter this match in 9th place on 44 points with a record of 11 wins, 11 draws and 11 losses following a 2-1 loss to Roma in their last match. In the loss to Roma, Verona fell behind in the 10th minute when Roma would convert from the penalty spot and Roma would double their lead in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time. Matteo Pessina would get Verona on the board two minutes after halftime, but unfortunately that was as close as Verona would get as Roma would ride the 2-1 lead out to the finish line and pick up the points as a result. Pessina’s goal ties him with Samuel Di Carmine for the team-high with 6 goals apiece while Darko Lazovic has a team-high 6 assists this season. Marco Silvestri is Verona’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.06 goals per 90 minutes with 9 clean sheets in 33 league appearances this season.
Atalanta on the other hand, sit near the top of the Serie A mountain, seven points behind league-leading Juventus on 70 points with a record of 21 wins, 7 draws and 5 losses following a 6-2 beatdown of Brescia last time out. In the victory over Brescia, Mario Pasalic opened the scoring in the 2nd minute for Atalanta, but Brescia would equalize just six minutes later. Marten De Roon would restore Atalanta’s lead before Ruslan Malinovsky pushed the lead to 3-0 three minutes after than and Duvan Zapata chipped in a 4th two minutes later. Pasalic would strike twice in three minutes early in the second half to complete his hat trick and push Atalanta’s lead to a whopping 6-1. Brescia would get a consolation goal in the 83rd but it was far too late as the damage had been done well before. Luis Muriel leads Atalanta in scoring with 17 goals while Zapata is right behind with 16 goals and 5 assists and Josip Ilicic has 15 goals this season. Alejandro Gomez leads Atalanta in assists with 16 helpers this season. Pierluigi Gollini leads Atalanta in goal, conceding just 1.18 goals per 90 minutes with 7 clean sheets in 28 league appearances this season.
I’ll give full marks to Verona performing well this season after coming up from Serie B. However, Verona just isn’t playing well down the stretch, since the restart more specifically and they’ve allowed two goals in six of eight games since the restart. Atalanta is a scoring machine, looking like they’re going to eclipse the 100-goal mark this season, and are scoring for fun at this point. Each of the last four meetings have seen at least three goals, with the last two games seeing five goals apiece, so I think we’re in for a high scoring affair here, in which case I’ll side with the over as my free pick for this match. My stronger play on the side for this one that I have as a premium pick that you can find here.
