Getafe play host to Atletico Madrid in La Liga soccer action from the Coliseum Alfonso Perez on Thursday afternoon.
Getafe come into this match in 6th place on 54 points with a record of 14 wins, 12 draws and 10 losses following a scoreless draw with Alaves last time out. In the tie with Alaves, Getafe saw the bulk of the chances with 54% possession and a 14-3 edge in attempts at goal including 4 shots on target to Alaves’ 1. Getafe thought they had the breakthrough goal in the 88th minute, but VAR would determine that a handball occurred in the buildup to the goal, wiping it off of the board and forcing Getafe to settle for a draw at full time. Jaime Mata leads Getafe in scoring with 11 goals while Angel Rodriguez has 10 goals and Marc Cucurella has a team-high 5 assists this season. Damian Suarez and Jason each have 4 assists as well on the year. David Soria is Getafe’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.89 goals per 90 minutes with 15 clean sheets in 36 league appearances this season.
Atletico Madrid on the other hand, enter this match in 3rd place on 66 points with a record of 17 wins, 15 draws and 4 losses after a 1-0 win over Real Betis last time out. In the victory over Betis, Atletico couldn’t catch a break in the first half with two separate VAR calls taking goals off of the board for Atleti. One came in the 22nd minute via a handball and the other happened in the 36th minute with an offside. The draw would hold up into the second half before Diego Costa finally gave Atletico the breakthrough goal to take a 1-0 lead and as Atletico has done all season long, they’d shut the door defensively from that point on, picking up the win and the points in the process. Alvaro Morata leads Atletico Madrid in scoring with 12 goals while Angel Correa has a team-high 6 assists and Koke has 5 assists for Atletico Madrid this season. Jan Oblak is Atletico Madrid’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.64 goals per 90 minutes with 16 clean sheets in 36 league appearances this season.
This is a hard one to call as you have Atletico Madrid in much better form, but Getafe are the team that need the points and it’s hard to project what effort we will get from both sides, moreso from Atletico who are pretty much entrenched in the 3rd or 4th spot. With that said, Getafe and Atletico have a combined 27 draws between themselves this season and I could easily see the two sides ending this one all square as a point wouldn’t hurt either one. I just don’t think there’s enough here to push Getafe ahead and I don’t know how badly Madrid will push for the result here so the draw will be my main bet for this match.
