Athletic Bilbao play host to Leganes in La Liga soccer action from the Estadio San Mames on Thursday afternoon.
Athletic Bilbao enter this one in 8th place on 51 points with a record of 13 wins, 12 draws and 11 losses following a 2-1 win over Levante in their last match. In the win over Levante, Raul Garcia gave Bilbao the lead after just four minutes before completing his brace and doubling Bilbao’s lead in the first minute of first half stoppage time. Levante would own 60% possession in the second half but put just one shot on target, which found the back of the net in the 71st minute, but it wasn’t enough as Bilbao held on for the win and a huge three points. Raul Garcia leads Athletic Bilbao in scoring with 15 goals this season while Ander Capa, Unal Lopez and Inigo Cordoba each have a team-high 4 assists this season. Unai Simon is Bilbao’s #1 goalkeeper, conceding 0.85 goals per 90 minutes with 12 clean sheets in 33 league appearances this season.
Leganes on the other side, enters this match in 18th on 32 points with a record of 7 wins, 11 draws and 18 losses following a 1-0 win over Valencia in their last match. In the win over Valencia, Ruben Perez would give Leganes the lead in the 18th minute from the penalty spot. The lead would hold into the second half where Leganes would go down to ten men in the 54th after Jonathan Silva ended up with a yellow card. Leganes would dodge another bullet on the hour mark when Valencia would miss a penalty that would’ve tied the game. That would be big as Leganes held on over the last 30+ minutes to lock up the result and a huge three points in the fight for survival. Oscar Rodriguez leads Leganes in scoring with 9 goals while Roque Mesa has a team-high 3 assists for Leganes this season.
This match is huge for Leganes as they need to win both of their last two games and get some help for a chance at survival. With that said, I don’t see it happening as I’m sure Leganes is aware of the position they’ve put themselves in. Even a win over Bilbao means they’d have to win against Real Madrid next match and it’s a longshot at best. Bilbao on the other hand have a legitimate shot at a Europa League spot, with Sociedad playing some disappointing soccer since the restart and a tough match against Sevilla this week. I’ll take my chances with Bilbao on the ML here.
