Villarreal play host to Real Sociedad in La Liga soccer action from the Estadio de la Ceramica on Monday afternoon.
Villarreal enters this one in 5th place on 57 points with a record of 17 wins, 6 draws and 12 losses following a 3-1 win over Getafe last time out. In the win over Getafe, the first half was completely clean with no scoring and no bookings, but Santi Cazorla would open the scoring for Villarreal in the 66th. Getafe would tie the game at one in the 80th, but Villarreal would take the lead again from the penalty spot off of the boot of Cazorla who completed his brace. Ruben Pena added an insurance goal for Villarreal in stoppage time to secure the win and send Getafe back empty-handed. Gerard Moreno leads Villarreal in scoring with 16 goals along with 5 assists while Santi Cazorla has 10 goals with 8 assists this season. Sergio Asenjo leads Villarreal in goal, conceding 1.09 goals per 90 minutes with 11 clean sheets in 32 league appearances this season.
Real Sociedad on the other hand, come into this match in 7th place on 51 points with a record of 15 wins, 6 draws and 14 losses following a 3-2 loss to Granada last time out. In the loss to Granada, Sociedad fell behind in the 21st minute and Granada doubled the lead in the 43rd but Mikel Merino would pull a goal back for Sociedad two minutes after halftime and Mikel Oyarzabal tied the game at two in the 83rd minute. The tie would only hold for five minutes until Granada stole the lead and the win in the 88th minute as Sociedad just didn’t have an answer late. Oyarzabal and Willian Jose each have a team-high 10 goals with Oyarzabal adding a team-high 10 assists this season.
I’ve been high on Villarreal lately as they’ve done nothing but pick up wins for the most part since the restart and have fired themselves into contention for a European competition spot next year. However, they’re also missing key guys for this match like Gerard Moreno and Vicente Iborra due to suspension. Real Sociedad have injuries of their own, but Sociedad will just be out to get a result after falling apart since the resumption of play in La Liga. I think in the end, the two sides cancel each other out and we see a draw at full time, so that will be my pick for this match.
