Toronto FC (WDLWW) and DC United (WLLDD) will meet on Sunday, July 12th for group stage action in the MLS is Back Tournament. Both teams are in Group B of the tournament, and each team will be playing its first game since the break ended. The match is scheduled for a 9:00 AM EST start time and it will be televised on ESPN 2.
Toronto FC is one of the favorites to win this tournament, as this team has a ton of experience under its belt. Although the MLS is Back Tournament is a totally new experience for everyone participating, Toronto FC has the makeup for a deep run. In its two games before the break occurred, Toronto FC drew against San Jose 2-2 on the road and defeated NYCFC 1-0 at home. Toronto FC made it all the way to the MLS Cup in 2019, as the club defeated DC United, NYCFC, and Atlanta United FC in the Eastern Conference playoffs to reach the final. Seattle defeated Toronto in that final, 3-1.
Group B should be a really tight group, as Toronto FC, DC United, and New England Revolution should all be in the mix for those coveted top two spots. New England defeated Montreal Impact 1-0, so a team like DC United has to start hot in its first game if the club wants to advance. DC United won and lost one match each in the two matches it played before the break. The victory came against the new expansion club Inter Miami CF by the final score of 2-1 at home. The loss was by the same score and in the same location to Colorado. DC United cannot afford a blowout loss in this match, as even a 1-0 loss would not be too devastating for the club. If DC United drops this game by two goals or more, it could be very difficult for the team to earn the second spot in Group B, considering that New England already has three points.
The last time Toronto FC and DC United met was on October 19th of 2019, in which Toronto FC destroyed DC United at home by the final score of 5-1.
I like Toronto FC's experience and talent level to outperform DC United in this match. I think Toronto FC has what it takes to make a very deep run in this tournament, and it all starts in game 1. I will take Toronto FC against the spread.
