Getafe host Villarreal in La Liga soccer action from the Coliseum Alfonso Perez on Wednesday afternoon.
Getafe enters this match in 6th position with 53 points and a record of 14 wins, 11 draws and 9 losses following a scoreless tie with Osasuna last time out. In the tie with Osasuna, the first half was quiet, with Osasuna receiving three bookings and while the second half showed some life, Getafe would be held the entire second half without a shot on goal, ultimately forcing the two sides to share the points with a scoreless draw at full time. Jaime Mata leads Getafe in scoring with 11 goals along with 3 assists while Angel Rodriguez has 10 goals with 3 assists. Marc Cucurella leads Getafe in assists with 5 helpers while Damian Suarez and Jason each have 4 assists this season. David Soria is Getafe’s #1 goalkeeper, conceding 0.88 goals per 90 minutes with 14 clean sheets in 34 league appearances this season.
Villarreal on the other hand, come into this game in 5th on 54 points with a record of 16 wins, 6 draws and 12 losses after a 4-1 loss to Barcelona in their last match. In the loss to Barcelona, Villarreal fell behind just 3 minutes into the game with an own goal. Gerard Moreno would tie the game at one in the 14th but Barcelona would restore the lead six minutes later. Barca would surge 3-1 ahead in the 45th and things wouldn’t get much better in the second half. Barca had a 4th goal overturned in the 69th via VAR, Villarreal would end up conceding a 4th goal in the 86th, securing the result for Barcelona and leaving Villarreal empty-handed. Moreno leads Villarreal in scoring with 16 goals along with 4 assists while Santi Cazorla has 8 goals with a team-high 8 assists. Sergio Asenjo leads Villarreal as the team’s top goaltender, conceding 1.1 goals per 90 minutes with 11 clean sheets in 31 league appearances this season.
Villarreal got me against Barcelona, but I’m chalking that up to Barca having a fire lit under them after all of this controversy with Lionel Messi and the higher ups in the Barcelona boardroom. Villarreal are still a quality side that’s in form right now, going 5-1-1 since the restart with five clean sheets over that span. Getafe has lost eight of 10 games against teams in the top seven this season and failing to score in back-to-back games isn’t the kind of form you want to carry into a high-stakes game like this one. I’ll take a shot with Villarreal on the ML to pick up a key three points here.
