Fiorentina and Cagliari square off in Serie A soccer action from the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Wednesday afternoon.
Fiorentina comes into this match in 13th position on 34 points with a record of 8 wins, 10 draws and 12 losses following a 2-1 win over Parma in their last match. In the win over Parma, a pair of Erick Pulgar penalties in the 19th and 31st minutes staked Fiorentina an early 2-0 lead that they’d carry into the half. Parma would pull a goal back with a penalty of their own in the 49th, and would hold 57% possession in the second half but 2-1 was as close as Parma would get as Fiorentina would ride their two goals to the finish line to pick up the win. Pulgar, Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa each have a team-high 6 goals with Pulgar and Dalbert each boasting a team-high 4 assists. Bartlomiej Dragowski leads Fiorentina in goal, conceding 1.31 goals per 90 minutes with 7 clean sheets in 29 league appearances this season.
Cagliari on the other hand, enter this match in 11th place on 39 points, tied with Parma with a record of 10 wins, 9 draws and 11 losses following a 1-0 loss to Atalanta in their last match. Cagliari thought they had a lead just 12 minutes into the game, but VAR would overturn the decision after a handball was discovered in the leadup to the goal. Cagliari took another step in the wrong direction in the 27th minute when Andrea Carboni would receive his second yellow card, resulting in his sending off and Cagliari being reduced to ten men. Atalanta would convert the ensuing spot kick to take the lead and Cagliari would struggle to get anything going the rest of the way with just 34% possession and one shot on target in the second half. In the end, Atalanta would continue their strong run of form while leaving Cagliari to deal with defeat. Joao Pedro leads Cagliari in scoring with 17 goals while Simeone has 10 goals and Radja Nainggolan has a team-high 7 assists this season.
Fiorentina got the nice win against Parma but the problem I’m having with the Violas is that they haven’t won at home since January, and while the hiatus has been thrown in the middle of that, it still marks five consecutive home games without a win for Fiorentina. On the other hand, Cagliari hasn’t done all that badly, as the loss to Atalanta wasn’t anything to sneeze at, but there’s still a lot to be desired over the last few games. I’m having a hard time separating the two sides and think that the two cancel each other out in a draw. I’ll side with the draw as my main bet for this match as well as the correct score prediction of 1-1 for sizeable plus odds.
