Atalanta and Sampdoria square off in Serie A soccer action from the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia on Wednesday afternoon.
Atalanta comes into this match in 4th place on 63 points with a record of 19 wins, 6 draws and 5 losses following an eighth straight win in the form of a 1-0 win over Cagliari last time out. In the win over Cagliari, Atalanta nearly fell behind in the 12th minute but VAR would overturn Cagliari’s opening goal due to a handball in the buildup to the goal. Cagliari would go down to ten men in the 27th and Luis Muriel would score the ensuing penalty to give Atalanta the lead. Atalanta would push further ahead in the second half with 66% possession and 10 attempts at goal with six shots on target, but in the end Muriel’s goal from the spot was all they would need as Atalanta held on for the win. Muriel’s goal gives him a team-high 16 goals this season while Josip Ilicic has 15 goals with 5 assists and Duvan Zapata has 14 goals with 5 assists of his own this season. Alejandro Gomez also has 6 goals with a team-high 15 assists this season for Atalanta. Pierluigi Gollini is Atalanta’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.23 goals per 90 minutes with 6 clean sheets in 26 league appearances this season.
Sampdoria on the other hand, come into this match in 14th place, tied with Udinese on 32 points with a record of 9 wins, 5 draws and 16 losses following a 3-0 win over Spal last time out. In the win over Spal, Sampdoria did all of their damage in the first half with Karol Linetty giving Samp the lead just 12 minutes in and the lead would hold until Manolo Gabbiadini made it 2-0 in the 45th and Linetty would push the lead to 3-0 two minutes later, completing the brace in the process. Spal would have 60% possession in the second half, but in the end, they wouldn’t get any closer as Sampdoria held on for the win and a massive three points. Fabio Quagliarella leads Sampdoria with 9 goals on the year while Gabbiadini has 8 goals and Linetty now has 4 goals with a team-high 3 assists. Emil Audero leads Sampdoria in goal, conceding 1.63 goals per 90 minutes with 8 clean sheets in 30 league appearances this season.
I’d like to give Sampdoria a chance here as they’ve won back-to-back games and have won three of the last five and four of the last seven against Atalanta. However, winning games over Spal and Lecce gets points on the board, but it doesn’t mean you’re ready to hang with the most offensively explosive team in Serie A this season. Atalanta’s won eight straight games dating back to before the hiatus, and have scored 83 goals already this season. I just don’t see Sampdoria being able to keep pace here, so I’ll side with Atalanta on the -1.5 handicap to get the wager down to even money.
