Villarreal play host to Barcelona in La Liga soccer action from the Estadio de la Ceramica on Sunday afternoon.
Villarreal come into this match sitting in 5th place on 54 points with a record of 16 wins, 6 draws and 11 losses after posting a 5th win in 6 tries since the restart with a 2-0 win over Real Betis last time out. In the win over Real Betis, Villarreal jumped out to an early lead from the penalty spot 7 minutes into the game off of the boot of Gerard Moreno. Moreno would double his tally and Villarreal’s lead on the half hour mark and that was all Villarreal would need the rest of the way as Betis were reduced to ten men just before halftime and never really threatened the rest of the way. Moreno’s brace gives him a team-high 15 goals this season while Santi Cazorla has a team-high 8 assists on the year. Sergio Asenjo leads Villarreal in goal, conceding one goal per 90 minutes with 11 clean sheets in 30 league appearances this season.
Barcelona on the other end, sits in 2nd place on 70 points, four points behind league-leading Real Madrid with a record of 21 wins, 7 draws and 5 losses after back-to-back draws, including a 2-2 tie with Atletico Madrid last time out. In the draw with Atletico, Barca took the lead in the 11th minute from an Atleti own goal but Atletico would tie the game from the penalty spot eight minutes later. Barcelona would restore the lead five minutes after the half when Leo Messi converted a spot kick of his own, but again, Atletico wasn’t far behind, tying the game at one in the 62nd minute. Barca would own 72% possession in the second half, but ultimately the two sides would share the points at full time. Messi leads Barcelona with 22 goals and 17 assists while Luis Suarez has 13 goals and 8 assists this season. Marc-Andre Ter-Stegen is Barca’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.94 goals per 90 minutes with 12 clean sheets in 32 league appearances this season.
I get why Barcelona’s favored here, even on the road as Villarreal won’t have fans in the stands at home to cheer them on in a crucial match like this one. However, Lionel Messi has grown frustrated with the club as he feels that reports have made it appear that he’s responsible for the club’s shortcomings this season and that the team lacks the quality to remain competitive. That usually brings out one of two responses. The team in question either comes out firing and takes no prisoners, or it drags down the whole process and the team disappoints. Most games I’d think the former, but Villarreal is in such a strong run of form right now, I feel tat this could be a game that adds onto the issues. It’s a tall task, but I think Villarreal can pull it off. I will side with Villarreal and the huge plus money on the ML here.
