Napoli plays host to AS Roma in Serie A soccer action from the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday afternoon.
Napoli comes into this match in 6th place on 45 points with a record of 13 wins, 6 draws and 10 losses after a 2-0 loss to Atalanta in their last match. In the loss to Atalanta, the first half was completely clean, no scoring and no bookings, but early in the second half is where Atalanta would do their damage, taking the lead in the 47th and doubling the lead just eight minutes later. Napoli would storm in the second half, with 60% possession and 9 attempts at goal with 5 shots on target, but none of those shots on goal would find the back of the net, leaving Napoli empty-handed with the loss at the full time whistle. Arkadiusz Milik leads Napoli in scoring with 10 goals on the year, while Dries Mertens has 7 goals with 4 assists and Lorenzo Insigne has 5 goals with 5 assists. Jose Callejon has a team-high 6 assists as well for Napoli this season.
AS Roma on the other side, enter the game in 5th place on 48 points with a record of 14 wins, 6 draws and 9 losses following a second consecutive 2-0 loss, this one coming at the hands of Udinese last time out. In the loss to Udinese, Roma fell behind just 12 minutes into the match and were dealt a blow when Diego Perotti was sent off with a straight red card in the 29th minute. Roma would have 4 shots on target in the second half but like Napoli, none of those shots would find the back of the net, leaving Roma off of the score sheet at full time. Edin Dzeko leads Roma in scoring with 14 goals along with 4 assists this season while Lorenzo Pellegrini has a team-high 9 assists for Roma this year. Pau Lopez is Roma’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.32 goals per 90 minutes with 5 clean sheets in 25 league appearances this season.
I’ve gone back and forth and it’s hard to really pick a side as Napoli’s played well before the loss to Atalanta while Roma’s stumbled, but both need points to keep in the Europa League chase for next year. Instead of trying to pick a side, I’m going to predict that both teams score and that we see over 2.5 goals which has occurred in three of the last four head-to-head meetings. I wouldn’t be surprised with a 2-1 final either way, maybe a 2-2 draw or 3-1 or 3-2 result for either side. Any way you slice it, Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals is my main bet for this match.
