Athletic Bilbao play host to Real Madrid in La Liga soccer action from the Estadio San Mames on Sunday morning
Athletic Bilbao enter this match fresh off of back-to-back wins, following their 2-0 win over Valencia last time out. The win put Bilbao on 48 points in 8th place with a record of 12 wins, 12 draws and 9 losses. In the win over Valencia, Raul Garcia fired Bilbao in front just 13 minutes into the game, and the lead would hold until Garcia secured his brace and pushed Bilbao 2-0 ahead just two minutes into the second half. Bilbao would hold Valencia to just one shot on goal in the entire match, and that defensive performance was enough to earn the clean sheet and the win in addition to the three points that goes along with it. Garcia’s brace gives him a team-high 13 goals this season while Ander Capa, Inigo Cordoba and Unai Lopez all have 4 assists this year. Unai Simon is Bilbao’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.8 goals per 90 minutes with 12 clean sheets in 30 league appearances this season.
Real Madrid on the other hand, come into this match leading the way in the La Liga table, on 74 points with a record of 22 wins, 8 draws and 3 losses following a 1-0 win over Getafe in their last match, making it 6 wins in 6 games since the restart for Real. In the victory over Getafe, the first half saw Madrid pick up three booking but no scoring was done, and it stayed scoreless for much of the second half before Sergio Ramos converted from the penalty spot in the 79th to give Madrid a 1-0 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way, picking up the win at full time. Karim Benzema leads Real Madrid in scoring with 17 goals on the year while also boasting a team-high 7 assists and Ramos’ penalty gives him 9 goals for the season, second on the team. Thibaut Courtois is Real Madrid’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.57 goals per 90 minutes with 16 clean sheets in 30 league appearances this season.
The heavy plus money with Bilbao is tempting considering Bilbao’s picked up points in five of six games since La Liga’s restart, with the one loss coming in a 1-0 loss to Barcelona. Real Madrid on the other hand, have been rolling along, keeping tight defensively, but Real also haven’t been lighting up the scoreboard and 1-0 wins against Getafe and Espanyol leave a lot to be desired. Which is why I’m siding with the draw here. Four of the last five head-to-head meetings have finished all square, and Bilbao’s form suggests they can be a thorn in Real’s side once again. I’ll side with the draw as my main bet as well as the correct score of 1-1 for decent sized plus odds.
