Werder Bremen take on Heidenheim in a Bundesliga relegation playoff soccer matchup from the Weserstadion on Thursday afternoon.
Werder Bremen enter this match hoping to avoid relegation for the first time since the 1979/80 season, after earning their chance in the playoff with a 6-1 beatdown of Koln on the final matchday of the season. In the win over Koln, Werder Bremen opened the scoring in the 22nd minute off of the boot of Yuya Osako. Milot Rashica pushed it to 2-0 in the 27th and Niclas Fullkrug pushed the lead to 3-0 just two minutes later. Davy Klaassen pushed the lead to 4-0 in the 55th and Osako added a second goal to complete his brace in the 58th minute and make it 5-0 Bremen. Koln got on the board in the 62nd minute, but Josh Sargent would respond six minutes later for Werder Bremen and slam the door shut on the season with a bang. Rashica and Osako are tied for the team-high with 8 goals apiece while Rashica has a team-high 5 assists level with Davy Klaassen who has 5 assists to go along with his 7 goals this season. Jiri Pavlenka is the top goalkeeper for Werder Bremen, conceding 1.94 goals per 90 minutes with 4 clean sheets in 33 league appearances this season.
Heidenheim on the other hand, will be looking for promotion to Germany’s top flight for the first time in club history after finishing in 3rd in the 2.Bundesliga with a record of 15 wins, 10 draws and 9 losses despite a 3-0 loss to Arminia Bielefeld in the final matchday of the season. Heldenheim fell behind in the 13th minute and went 2-0 down just four minutes later. Arminia added a 3rd in the 53rd minute, essentially putting the result out of reach for Heidenheim. Tim Kleindienst leads Heidenheim in scoring with 14 goals this season while Marc Schnatterer has a team-high 6 assists this season. Kevin Muller is Heidenheim’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.06 goals per 90 minutes with 15 clean sheets in 33 league appearances this season.
The plus money with Heldenheim is tempting as they’re coming off of their best 2.Bundesliga season in club history and Werder Bremen wasn’t all that great at home this season. However, the last matchday showed us that Werder Bremen can win when it counts at home, and as good as Heldenheim’s been over the course of the season, they’re on a six game winless run away from home, scoring just one goal over that span and those games were against second division teams. Imagine having that poor run of away form and now having to travel to take on a Werder Bremen side that has a ton of pride to begin with and s full of confidence after saving themselves at the death. I just think Bremen swarms Heldenheim here, so I’ll side with Bremen to win to nil at home here.
