Real Sociedad play host to Espanyol in La Liga soccer action from the Reale Seguros Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Real Sociedad enter this match in 7th place on 47 points with a record of 14 wins, 5 draws and 13 losses following a 4th consecutive defeat in the form of a 2-1 loss to Getafe last time out. In the defeat against Getafe, Real Sociedad fell behind in the 20th minute from the penalty spot, but Sociedad would make it up ten minutes after the half thanks to Adnan Januzaj’s equalizer for the visitors. A draw looked more and more on the cards as the game progressed, but Getafe would pull ahead in the 83rd minute and not look back, leaving Sociedad empty-handed for the fourth time in five games since the restart in La Liga. Mikel Oyarzabal and Willian Jose share the team-high in goals with 9 with Oyarzabal adding 7 assists while Alexander Isak and Portu each have 7 goals with Portu adding a team-high 8 assists this season.
Espanyol on the other hand, continue to sit in the bottom of the La Liga table on 24 points with a record of 5 wins, 9 draws and 18 losses after a third consecutive loss in the form of a 1-0 loss to Real Madrid last time out. In the loss to Real Madrid, Espanyol fell behind just before halftime, but made their best efforts to get back into the match despite just 31% possession in the game. Espanyol had 8 attempts at goal and 5 shots on target, but none of them would find the back of the net, leaving Espanyol empty-handed once again at full time. Wu Lei and Raul de Tomas lead Espanyol in scoring with 4 goals apiece while Matias Vargas, Adrian Embarba and Jonathan Calleri each have 3 assists this season. Diego Lopez is Espanyol’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.52 goals per 90 minutes with 4 clean sheets in 31 league appearances this season.
Real Sociedad’s been the better side over the course of the season so I get them being favored here. However, Espanyol held their own against Real Madrid, and have been a lot more competitive than most teams we see in last place in their respective leagues. Sociedad’s run has to end eventually one would think, but until I see it, any result is possible. I’m going to take a shot with the draw here as I think Espanyol can grind out a point against Sociedad at full time.
