Verona and Parma square off in Serie A soccer action from the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi on Wednesday afternoon.
Verona come into this match in 9th place on 39 points with a record of 10 wins, 9 draws and 9 losses after a 3-3 draw with Sassuolo last time out. In the tie with Sassuolo, The first half saw one booking per side, but no scoring, leaving all of the fireworks for the second half. Darko Lazovic gave Verona the lead in the 51st minute but Sassuolo would respond with an equalizing goal just two minutes later. Mariusz Stepinski would answer back for Verona four minutes after that to give Verona a 2-1 lead and Matteo Pessina would push the lead to 3-1 in the 68th. Sassuolo pulled one back in the 77th and would steal a point and the draw with the tying goal in the 6th minute of second-half stoppage time, denying Verona the win. Samuel Di Carmine leads Verona in scoring with 5 goals on the year while Lazovic has a team-high 6 assists and Mattia Zaccagni has 4 assists for Verona this season. Marco Silvestri is Verona’s top goalkeeper, conceding one goal per 90 minutes with 9 clean sheets in 28 league appearances this season.
Parma on the other hand, enter this one in 8th, tied on 39 points with a record of 11 wins, 6 draws and 11 losses after a 2-1 loss to Inter Milan in their last match. In the loss to Inter, Gervinho gave Parma the lead 10 minutes in and the lead would hold for much of the second half as well until Inter tied the game at one in the 84th and took the lead just three minutes alter. Parma wouldn’t be able to find the equalizing goal with just 35% possession in the second half, and time would run out as Inter held on for the win and sent Parma back empty-handed. Andreas Cornelius leads Parma in scoring with 11 goals while Gervinho and Dejan Kulusevski each have 6 goals this season with Kulusevski adding a team-high 7 assists.
As well as both sides have been playing this season, especially with Verona having come up from Serie B last season, both sides have hit a bumpy road as of late in terms of form. Parma’s had issues in terms of stringing consecutive wins together in 2020. Noticing a pattern, it’s win one for Parma and then go winless across the next two, so It’s conceivable that Verona could pick up a point here. Given that Verona’s not playing overly great themselves, I’ll side with the draw as I think both sides cancel each other out at full time. I’ll also side with Verona to score first as all but one of Parma’s games in this recent run of form I mentioned has seen Parma concede the first goal, so I’ll place a side bet on that as well.
