Werder Bremen take on FC Koln in Bundesliga soccer action from the Weserstadion on Saturday morning.
Werder Bremen come into this match sitting in 17th place, fighting for a relegation play-off spot with 28 points and a record of 7 wins, 7 draws and 19 losses after a 3-1 loss to Mainz in their last match. In the loss to Mainz, Bremen went from tied at 0-0 to 2-0 down in a span of five minutes as Mainz scored in the 25th and 30th minutes of play. Yuya Osako pulled a goal back for Bremen just before the hour mark in the 58th minute but Mainz would restore the two-goal cushion with five minutes to play in regular time, ending any hopes of a Bremen comeback late. Milot Rashica leads Werder Bremen in scoring with 7 goals along with a share of the team lead with 5 assists while Davy Klaassen and the aforementioned Osako each have 6 goals with Klaassen having 5 assists of his own. Jiri Pavlenka is Werder Bremen’s top goaltender, conceding 1.97 goals per 90 minutes with 4 clean sheets in 32 league appearances this season.
FC Koln on the other hand, enter this match in 14th place with 36 points and a record of 10 wins, 6 draws and 17 losses after a 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt in their last match. In the tie with Frankfurt, Florian Kainz gave Koln the lead from the penalty spot just before the half and the lead would hold for a good part of the second half before Frankfurt would tie the game at one in the 72nd minute. Koln would be outpossessed with just 40% possession in the second half without a shot on goal, eventually settling for a point with the full time draw at the final whistle. Jhon Cordoba leads Koln in scoring with 13 goals while Sebastiaan Bornauw has 5 goals and Florian Kainz and Mark Uth each have 5 goals with Kainz adding a team-high 6 assists while Uth has 5 helpers this season. Timo Horn is Koln’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.85 goals per 90 minutes with 6 clean sheets in 33 league appearances this season.
The problem I have here is that FC Koln have nothing to play for except pride, while Werder Bremen need nothing less than a win to have any chance at survival here. The issue with Werder Bremen is that they’ve been atrocious at home this season, and while there are no fans in the stands, it’s still a direct representation on how Werder plays in this venue. I think we see a tight game here with Werder not wanting to make a mistake that could cost them their stay in the top flight, so I’ll back the under 2.5 goals for decent plus money as my main bet as well as placing side bets on the draw and the 1-1 correct score as I think we see Bremen’s luck run out here.
