Wolfsburg play host to Bayern Munich in Bundesliga soccer action from Volkswagen Arena on Saturday morning.
Wolfsburg come into this match sitting in 6th place with a record of 13 wins, 10 draws and 10 losses on 49 points after a 4-1 win over Schalke in their last match. In the win over Schalke, Wout Weghorst opened the scoring in the 16th minute and the lead would hold into the half and for the first part of the second half before Weghorst completed his brace and made it 2-0 in the 56th. Kevin Mbabu pushed the lead to 3-0 three minutes later and Joao Victor made it 4-0 Wolfsburg in the 69th minute, but Schalke would break up the clean sheet bid just a minute later. It was too little too late for Schalke though, as Wolfsburg held on for the massive win. Weghorst’s pair of goals give him a team-high 16 goals this season while Maximilian Arnold has a team-high 8 assists this season.
Bayern Munich on the other hand, will look to finish the season on a high note atop the Bundesliga standings, leading the pack with 79 points and a record of 25 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses after a 3-1 win over Freiburg in their last match. In the win over Freiburg, all of the action came in the first half as Joshua Kimmich gave Bayern the lead in the 15th minute and Robert Lewandowski would make it 2-0 just nine minutes later. Freiburg would get on the board in the 33rd minute but Lewandowski would complete his brace just four minutes later, restoring the two goal lead at 3-1. Freiburg had the lone shot on target in the second half, but Munich would hold 58% possession and dictate the pace the rest of the way, holding on for the win and the three points that go with it. Lewandowski’s brace gives him a team-high and league-leading 33 goals this season while Serge Gnabry has 12 goals with 10 assists. Thomas Muller has a team-high 20 assists for Bayern this season as well. Manuel Neuer is Bayern’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.91 goals per 90 minutes with 14 clean sheets in 32 league appearances this season.
Wolfsburg is the only team here with a need to get a result from this match, as a win would secure a direct path into the Europa League next season. However, we saw Bayern put their foot down against Freiburg, and I see this match being no different. Bayern wants to keep momentum going with a second leg of their Champions League tie with Chelsea still to be played. I just think that Bayern comes out firing again here, so I’ll take Bayern on the ML as well as Robert Lewandowski to score the first goal at sizeable plus odds.
