Freiburg host Schalke in Bundesliga soccer action from the Schwarzwald-Stadion on Saturday morning.
Freiburg come into this match sitting in 8th place on 45 points with a record of 12 wins, 9 draws and 12 losses after a 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich in their last match. The first half saw all of the fireworks as Bayern Munich opened the scoring in the 15th minute before doubling their lead just nine minutes later. Lucas Holer would pull a goal back for Freiburg in the 33rd minute, but Bayern Munich would restore the two-goal cushion just four minutes after that. Despite their best efforts in the second half, Freiburg would hold just 42% possession with the half’s lone shot on target between the two sides, leaving Freiburg empty-handed at full time as Bayern Munich picked up another win. Nils Petersen leads Freiburg in scoring with 11 goals while Holer’s goal put him on 7 goals this season and Vincenzo Grifo has a team-high 7 assists this season.
Schalke on the other hand, come into this one in 11th place on 39 points with a record of 9 wins, 12 draws and 12 losses, pushing their winless run to 15 matches within the league after a 4-1 loss to Wolfsburg in their last match. In the loss to Wolfsburg, Schalke fell behind just 16 minutes into the game and the lead would hold for Wolfsburg until Schalke found themselves down 3-0 with Wolfsburg striking twice in a span of three minutes in the 56th and 59th minutes. Wolfsburg would push the lead to 4-0 in the 69th, but Rabbi Matondo would get Schalke on the board just a minute later to break the clean sheet for the visitors. That’s as close as Wolfsburg would let Schalke get though, as Schalke left another match empty-handed at full time. Amine Harit has 6 goals and 4 assists for Schalke while Bastian Oczipka has a team-high 5 assists for Schalke this season.
One would think with nothing but pride to play for, maybe it’s worth taking a flier on Schalke to pull out a win in the last game of the season. However, Schalke hasn’t won a game since January, and the 04ers are on a horrendous 15-game winless drought within the league. Freiburg hasn’t been overly convincing at home but they’ve been in better form lately. With that said I’ll take Freiburg to win and since I don’t see it being a high-scoring affair, I’ll take Freiburg to win with under 3.5 goals as I see this being a 2-1 game at most.
