Celta Vigo play host to Barcelona in La Liga soccer action from the Estadio de Balaidos on Saturday morning.
Celta Vigo come into this one in 16th place with a record of 7 wins, 12 draws and 12 losses following back-to-back wins after a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad in their last match. Iago Aspas would once again score from the penalty spot for Celta Vigo just before half time. Despite the second half being all Sociedad, with Real holding 62% possession with an 8-1 advantage in attempts at goal and 2-0 in terms of shots on target, Vigo’s defense would hold up and preserve Aspas’ penalty marker as the winner at the full time whistle. Aspas’ goal gave him a team-high 11th goal of the season while Denis Suarez leads Vigo with 5 assists this season. Ruben Blanco is Celta Vigo’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.07 goals per 90 minutes with 10 clean sheets in 29 league appearances this season.
Barcelona on the other hand, enter the match in 2nd tied with Real Madrid on points with 68 points and a record of 21 wins, 5 draws and 5 losses following a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in their last match. In the win over Bilbao, The first half only saw a single booking and no scoring and the second half saw much of the same. The difference was Barcelona’s 72% possession in the match including 74% in the second half with 11 shot attempts to Bilbao’s 1 and 3 shots on goal to Bilbao’s 0, when Ivan Rakitic put Barca ahead in the 71st minute. That stat advantage wouldn’t be enough for Bllbao to overcome as Barcelona held on for a massive three points to keep pace with Real at the top of the La Liga table. Lionel Messi leads the Catalans with 21 goals and 15 assists this season while Luis Suarez has 11 goals and 8 assists for Barcelona. Marc Andre Ter-Stegen is Barcelona’s leading goalkeeper, conceding 0.87 goals per 90 minutes with 12 clean sheets in 30 league appearances this season.
The plus money with Vigo at home is kind of tempting considering that Vigo’s won their last two matches by a combined score of 7-0, along with the fact that the road team hasn’t won in this fixture since 2015. However, Barcelona’s been stellar offensively in their own right, not allowing a single goal in their four games since the restart. Vigo needs points as well to maintain space from the relegation zone, but Barca need to keep winning to keep pace with Real Madrid for the title in case Madrid slip up along the way. I’ll take a shot with Barcelona to win with both teams to score – no as I have more faith in Barcelona keeping their clean defensive record in tact than I do Celta Vigo.
