Atletico Madrid host Alaves in La Liga soccer action from the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday afternoon.
Atletico Madrid come into this match in 3rd place on 55 points with a record of 14 wins, 13 draws and 4 losses following a 3rd consecutive victory in the form of a 1-0 win over Levante in their last match. In the win over Levante, Atletico were gifted the opening goal following a Levante miscue and own goal after 15 minutes of play. Levante would hold 57% possession over the course of the match, including 67% possession in the 2nd half, but Atletico would hold a 7-0 edge in terms of shots on target, making it difficult for Levante to equalize when none of the shots are hitting the net. In the end, Atletico would ride the goal to victory and send Levante back empty-handed. Alvaro Morata leads Atletico with 9 goals on the year while Joao Felix has 6 goals and Angel Correa has 5 goals with a team-high 6 assists. Jan Oblak is the top goaltender for Atleti, conceding 0.65 goals per 90 minutes with 14 clean sheets in 31 league appearances this season.
Alaves on the other hand, enter this match in 13th place on 35 points with a record of 9 wins, 8 draws and 14 losses following a 1-0 loss to Osasuna in their last game. In the defeat against Osasuna, the first half only saw one booking and no goals, but Osasuna would break the scoreless tie in the 64th minute of play. Alaves would have 52% possession in the game but would be held to 5 attempts at goal and no shots on target, leaving the match with nothing to show for their efforts at the full time whistle. Lucas Perez leads Alaves with 11 goals and 5 assists while Joselu has 9 goals and Aleix Vidal has 4 assists for Alaves this season. Fernando Pacheco is Alaves #1 goalkeeper, conceding 1.35 goals per 90 minutes with 6 clean sheets in 26 league appearances this season.
Part of me tried to make a case for Alaves, but I simply couldn’t. This match screams Madrid from top to bottom. Alaves has not been good on the road, and even if there’s no fans for Atletico, it hasn’t mattered as Alaves has been shut out in three of four games since the restart. On the other side, Atletico has lost just once at home all season long, has given up just one goal in four matches since the restart and has picked up a clean sheet in three straight matches. I’m not trying to lay this kind of juice with Atletico Madrid though, so I’ll bank on Atleti picking up another clean sheet here and take Atletico Madrid to win with both teams to score – no to get the price down here.
