Real Madrid play host to Mallorca in La Liga soccer action from the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Real Madrid come into this one leading La Liga, tied with Barcelona on 65 points with a record of 19 wins, 8 draws and 3 losses following a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad in their last match. In the win over Sociedad, the first half saw no scoring, just a handful of bookings, but Sergio Ramos would break the deadlock for Madrid five minutes after halftime from the penalty spot. Karim Benzema doubled the lead 20 minutes later. Real Sociedad pulled a consolation goal back late, but it wasn’t enough as Madrid held on for the win. Benzema leads Real Madrid in scoring with 17 goals along with a team-high 6 assists while Sergio Ramos has 7 goals and Toni Kroos and Federico Valverde each have 5 assists for Real Madrid this season. Thibault Courtois is Real Madrid’s top goaltender, conceding 0.63 goals per 90 minutes with 13 clean sheets in 27 league appearances this season.
Mallorca on the other hand, come into this match in 18th place on 26 points with a record of 7 wins, 5 draws and 18 losses after a 1-1 draw with Leganes last time out. In the draw with Leganes, Salva Sevilla gave Mallorca the lead just 9 minutes in and the goal looked like it was going to hold up as the winner through the half and most of the second half but Leganes would tie the game at one in the 87th minute. Both sides would have chances late, but ultimately the points would be shared as neither side found a late winner. Ante Budimir leads Mallorca in scoring with 9 goals while Dani Rodriguez has 5 goals and Salva Sevilla and Aleix Febas each have 3 assists for Mallorca this season. Manuel Rodriguez is Mallorca’s top goaltender, conceding 1.55 goals per 90 minutes with 4 clean sheets in 29 league appearances this season.
Heavy plus money like what Mallorca is getting is tempting on the surface, but the plus money is like that for a reason. Real Madrid is one of the top teams in La Liga, while Mallorca is going to have a hard time staying up in the top flight this season. We’ve already seen Mallorca get waxed 4-0 by Barcelona since the restart and I’m not expecting much different here. I’ll take Madrid with the -2.5 handicap as I expect this game to get ugly.
