Inter Milan host Sassuolo in Serie A soccer action from the San Siro on Wednesday afternoon.
Inter Milan come into this match in 3rd place, sitting with 57 points and a record of 17 wins, 6 draws and 3 losses after a 2-1 win over Sampdoria in their last game. In the victory over Sampdoria, Romelu Lukaku gave Inter the lead just 10 minutes into the match and Lautaro Martinez would double Inter’s lead in the 33rd minute. The lead would hold into the half but Sampdoria would pull a goal back in the 52nd minute. Inter would just suffocate Sampdoria the rest of the way, finishing with 78% possession as well as 81% possession in the second half, holding onto their 2-1 lead and riding it to the full time whistle. Lukaku leads Inter in scoring with 18 goals while Martinez has 12 goals this season for Inter. Antoni Candreva leads Inter Milan in assists with 6 assists this season while Marcelo Brozovic is right behind with 5 assists this season. Samir Handanovic is Inter’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.87 goals per 90 minutes with 7 clean sheets in 23 league appearances this season.
Sassuolo come in on 32 points, with a record of 9 wins, 5 draws and 12 losses following a 4-1 loss to Atalanta in their last match. In the defeat against Atalanta, Sassuolo fell behind in the 16th minute and almost went down 2-0 just four minutes later but VAR would overturn Atalanta’s second goal after a handball was ruled in the leadup to the goal. Atalanta would find the second goal without question in the 31st and an own goal from Sassuolo’s Mehdi Bourabia would make it 3-0 Atalanta just six minutes later. Atalanta would go up 4-0 in the 66th but Bourabia would make amends with a goal in second-half stoppage time to break Atalanta’s bid for a clean sheet. Francesco Caputo leads Sassuolo in scoring with 13 goals along with 4 assists while Domenico Berardi has 9 goals and a team-high 5 assists. Andrea Consigli is Sassuolo’s top goaltender, conceding 1.62 goals per 90 minutes with 4 clean sheets in 21 league appearances this season.
I’d be remised if I didn’t take a look at Sassuolo and the heavy plus odds as Sassuolo has been a thorn in Inter’s side, winning seven of the last ten head-to-head meetings with Inter Milan within the league. However, I do think that Inter are the better side here, need the win more to keep themselves in Champions’ League contention and are just in better form than Sassuolo out of the break. I’ll side with Inter to pick up the win, but given Sassuolo’s history of finding their scoring boots in this fixture, I’ll take Inter to win with both teams to score for decent plus odds.
