Atalanta host Lazio in Serie A soccer action from the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia on Wednesday afternoon.
Atalanta come into this match sitting in 4th on 51 points with a record of 15 wins, 6 draws and 5 losses after a 4-1 win over Sassuolo in their last matchup. In the win over Sassuolo, Berat Djimsiti gave Atalanta the lead just 16 minutes into the game and would have a 2nd goal disallowed thanks to VAR just four minutes later. Duvan Zapata would give Atalanta that second goal in the 31st minute and a Sassuolo own goal would push the lead to 3-0 just six minutes later. Zapata would complete his brace and add a 4th goal for Atalanta in the 66th, but their attempt at a clean sheet would be denied in the second minute of second half stoppage time as Sassuolo would get on the board. It wasn’t enough as Atalanta would hold on for the win and the three points that go with it. Josip Ilicic leads Atalanta in scoring with 15 goals along with 5 assists while Zapata and Luis Muriel each have 13 goals. Alejandro Gomez leads Atalanta in assists with 11 helpers on the year. Pierluigi Gollini leads Atalanta in goal, conceding 1.22 goals per 90 minutes with 5 clean sheets in 23 league appearances this season.
Lazio on the other hand are still in 2nd place on 62 points with a record of 19 wins, 5 draws and a league-low 2 losses after a 2-0 win over Bologna in their last match before Serie A was forced to pause due to the Coronavirus outbreak. In the win over Bologna, Luis Alberto gave Lazio the lead in the 18th minute and Joaquin Correa doubled the lead just three minutes later. Lazio would dodge a couple of bullets in the second half as VAR wiped away a pair of Bologna goals in the 53rd and 68th minutes, one for handball and one for offsides as Lazio kept their clean sheet intact at full time. Ciro Immobile leads not only Lazio but all of Serie A in the goal scoring department with 27 goals this season while Luis Alberto has a team-high 12 assists this season.
I think you could make a case for either side, as Atalanta has had a game to shake off the rust and are as hot as any team in Serie A at the moment in terms of overall form. Lazio hasn’t had the game under their belt that Atalanta has, but Lazio are as deadly as they’ve ever been and are a legitimate threat to Juventus at the top of the table. I could also see a draw here, but instead of trying to pick a side, I’m going to focus on the total. This game features the two highest scoring sides in Serie A, with Atalanta tops in the league with 74 goals to Lazio’s 60 goals in 2nd. The total is set at three but I think we could get some extra value by taking the safety net of a push away and go up to 3.5 as I could see this one easily hitting four goals and it also gets us into plus money which isn’t a bad thing.
