AS Roma take on Sampdoria from the Stadio Olimpico in Serie A soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.
Roma come into this match sitting in 5th place on 45 points with a record of 13 wins, 6 draws and 7 losses following a 4-3 win over Cagliari in their last match before Serie A had to be paused in March due to the Coronavirus pandemic. In the win over Cagliari, Roma fell behind in the 28th minute but wasted no time tying the game at one in the 29th minute thanks to Nikola Kalinic’s goal. Kalinic would give Roma the lead just 13 minutes later with his 2nd goal of the match. Justin Kluivert gave Roma an insurance goal in the 64th but Cagliari would respond in the 75th. Henrik Mkhitaryan restored Roma’s two goal lead in the 81st from a drad ball, but Cagliari wouldn’t go away with a goal in the 89th to make it 4-3. Cagliari wouldn’t be able to find the equalizer though as Roma held on for the win. Edin Dzeko leads Roma with 12 goals and 4 assists while Pau Lopez is Roma’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.32 goals per 90 minutes with 5 clean sheets in 25 league appearances this season.
Sampdoria on the other hand, come into this one in 16th, sitting on 26 points with a record of 7 wins, 5 draws and 14 losses after a 2-1 loss to Inter Milan in their last match. In the defeat against Inter, Sampdoria fell behind after just 10 minutes before Inter doubled their lead in the 33rd minute. Sampdoria would pull a goal back in the 52nd thanks to Morten Thorsby, but Samp would have just 22% in the game and just 19% possession in the 2nd half, basically cancelling out Sampdoria’s chance to find an equalizing goal as Inter would hold on for the win. Fabio Quagliarella leads Sampdoria in scoring with 9 goals while Manolo Gabbiadini has 6 goals and Karol Linetty has 3 assists this season. Emil Audero is Sampdoria’s leading goaltender, conceding 1.69 goals per 90 minutes with 7 clean sheets in 26 league appearances this season.
Part of me wants to give Sampdoria a look just because they’ve had a game to shake off the rust, albeit in a loss to Inter. However, Roma’s simply the better team here fighting for a Champions’ League spot, while Sampdoria is just going to struggle getting away from the relegation spots at all the rest of the way. I’ll side with Roma to win and since a lot of the head-to-head meetings have been lower scoring affairs, I’ll package it with under 3.5 goals as well to get the wager into plus money.
