Alaves play host to Osasuna in La Liga soccer action from the Estadio Mendizorrolza on Wednesday afternoon.
Alaves come into this match in 13th place on 35 points with a record of 9 wins, 8 draws and 13 losses after a 6-0 beatdown loss to Celta Vigo in their last match. In the loss to Vigo, Alaves fell behind in the 14th minute and went 2-0 down just six minutes later when Celta converted from the penalty spot. Vigo were up 4-0 at the half with a pair of goals in the 40th and 41st minutes before adding goals #5 and #6 in the 78th and 86th minutes, leaving Alaves in the dust with just 27% possession, outshot 15-4 in goal attempts and 10-2 in shots on goal. Lucas Perez leads Alaves with 11 goals and 5 assists while Joselu has 9 goals and Aleix Vidal has 4 assists. Fernando Pacheco is Alaves’ top goaltender, conceding 1.36 goals per 90 minutes with 6 clean sheets in 25 league appearances this season.
Osasuna come into the match in 12th, also on 35 points with a record of 8 wins, 11 draws and 11 losses after a 2-0 loss to Valencia last time out. In the defeat against Valencia, Osasuna thought they dodged a bullet in the 3rd minute when Valencia had a goal overturned via VAR thanks to a player in an offside position but Valencia would pull ahead nine minutes later. Osasuna would fall behind 2-0 in the 35th minute and that was all that was needed as Osasuna just couldn’t get past the Valencia netminder, leaving the match at full time with no points to show for their hard work. Chimy Avila leads Osasuns in scoring with 9 goals while Roberto Torres and Ruben Garcia each have 6 goals with Torres adding a team-high 7 assists this season.
Normally I’m not trying to split hairs between two teams neck and neck in the bottom part of the standings. However, while Alaves’ home field advantage is gone with no fans in the stands, you’d have to think that they’d want to make amends after being demolished by Celta Vigo. Osasuna just got beat up by Valencia and Atletico Madrid by a combined 7-0 and now have to try to win a rivalry game without their leading scorer in Chimy Avila who is out with an injury. Alaves just tends to play better at home and they’re unbeaten in their last four home games so I’ll side with Alaves to pick up the win here.
