Barcelona hosts Athletic Bilbao in La Liga soccer action from the Camp Nou on Tuesday afternoon.
Barcelona come into this match tied atop the La Liga standings but in 2nd on head-to-head tiebreakers after a scoreless draw with Sevilla in their last match brought them to 65 points with a record of 20 wins, 5 draws and 5 losses. In the match against Sevilla, Barcelona had the bulk of the possession with 63% possession as well as 10 attempts at goal to Sevilla’s 8 with both teams having 4 shots on target. Barcelona had a whopping 19 free kicks and 9 corners but just couldn’t break through Sevilla’s goal, settling for a point and falling out of the driver’s seat in the race for the La Liga title. Lionel Messi leads Barcelona in scoring and assists with 21 goals and 14 assists on the year while Luis Suarez has 11 goals with 8 assists. Marc Andre Ter-Stegen is Barca’s top goalkeeper, conceding 0.9 goals per 90 minutes with 11 clean sheets in 29 league appearances this season.
Athletic Bilbao enter with 42 points and a record of 10 wins, 12 draws and 8 losses in 9th place, tied with Granada after picking up a 1-0 win over Real Betis in their last match. In the win over Betis, Bilbao took the lead just seven minutes in thanks to Inigo Martinez’s goal into the top corner. Bilbao’s lead would hold into the half and for most of the second half, but Betis would have a golden opportunity from the penalty spot in the 86th minute. Luckily, Sergio Canales for Betis rifled the ball about 20 rows deep over the crossbar, leaving the score at 1-0 which is where it finished as Bilbao bagged three points. Raul Garcia leads Bilbao in scoring with 10 goals while Inaki Williams has 6 goals and Ander Capa has a team-high 4 assists. Unai Simon is Bilbao’s top goaltender, conceding 0.81 goals per 90 minutes with 11 clean sheets in 27 league appearances this year.
Part of me gave a slight look to Bilbao considering they’re on a four game unbeaten run against Barcelona, but the last three games came at Bilbao and Bilbao hasn’t won at Barcelona since 2001. I think this is a game where we see Barcelona flex like they normally do at home where they’re unbeaten with 14 wins in 15 home matches this season. I’ll take Barcelona to win and to get the price down, I’ll back Barca with both teams to score – no at plus money as I see this being a 2-0 game.
