Real Sociedad and Real Madrid square off in La Liga soccer action from Reale Seguros Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Real Sociedad come into the match in 6th place on 47 points with a record of 14 wins, 5 draws and 10 losses after a 2-0 loss to Alaves in their last sim appearance. In the loss to Alaves, the match was scoreless at the half and in the 56th minute, Alaves would take the lead. The uphill battle didn’t get any easier for Sociedad as Joseba Zaldua was sent off in the 81st after a second yellow card. Sociedad were given a lifeline in the 87th minute when Alaves were reduced to ten men as well, but Sociedad couldn’t capitalize and Alaves would put their stamp on the win with a second goal in the sixth minute of second half stoppage time. Sociedad had 65% possession in the losing effort but had just one shot on goal which is a major contributor as to why they dropped the result against Alaves. Mikel Oyarzabal and Willian Jose each have a team-high 9 goals with Oyarzabal logging 6 assists. Alexander Isak and Portu each have 7 goals with Portu chipping in a team-high 8 assists on the year.
Real Madrid on the other hand, come into this match in 2nd place on 62 points with a record of 18 wins, 8 draws and 3 losses following a 3-0 win over Valencia in their last match. In the win over Valencia, Real Madrid dodged a bullet in the 21st when Valencia had a goal disallowed after VAR ruled that there was a player offside in the buildup to the goal. After a scoreless first half, Madrid broke the deadlock just after the hour mark thanks to a Karim Benzema goal in the 61st minute. Marco Asensio made it 2-0 right off of the bench for Real in the 74th minute followed by Benzema completing his brace in the 86th minute with his 2nd goal of the game giving Real Madrid an insurmountable 3-0 lead. Benzema leads Real Madrid in scoring with 16 goals along with 6 assists while Toni Kroos has 5 assists and Sergio Ramos has 6 goals. Thibaut Courtois is Real Madrid’s #1 goalkeeper, conceding 0.62 goals per 90 minutes with 13 clean sheets in 26 league appearances this season.
The plus money with Sociedad is tempting as they’ve won 3 of the last 4 head-to-head against Madrid, and are a decent home side. The problem is that Real are the best away team in La Liga right now, and Sociedad don’t have any fans in the stands to give them that extra push. Real also has a chance to hop in the driver’s seat in the race for the La Liga title with Barcelona slipping up against Sevilla on Friday, and I think they take full advantage winning this one. However I think Sociedad puts up a fight, so I’ll take Real Madrid with both teams to score for decent plus money.
