Everton host rival Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby in English Premier League soccer action from Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.
Everton enter this derby fixture in 12th place, sitting on 37 points with a record of 10 wins, 7 draws and 12 losses after a 4-0 loss to Chelsea in their last match before the Premier League was halted due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. In the loss to Chelsea, Everton fell behind in the 14th minute and then 2-0 down just seven minutes later. The lead would carry over into the second half where Chelsea would add two more goals in the 51st and 54th to take the insurmountable 4-0 lead. Dominic Calvert-Lewin leads Everton in scoring with 13 goals this season while Richarlison has 10 goals with 3 assists. Lucas Digne leads Everton with 5 assists this season while Djibril Sidibe has 4 assists. Jordan Pickford is Everton’s top goalkeeper, conceding 1.34 goals per 90 minutes with 6 clean sheets in 29 league appearances this season.
Liverpool on the other hand, come into this match with one hand on the Premier League title, sitting on 82 points with a record of 27 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss after a 2-1 win over Bournemouth in their last match before the Premier League was paused. In the win over Bournemouth, Liverpool fell behind just nine minutes in, but Mo Salah would tie the game at one in the 25th minute and Sadio Mane would give the Reds a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way. All of this while Liverpool held 74% possession with a 14-6 edge in terms of goal attempts and a 6-4 edge in shots on goal in the win. Salah leads Liverpool in scoring with 16 goals with 6 assists while Sadio Mane has 14 goals with a team-high 7 assists and Roberto Firmino has 8 goals with 7 assists.
I think it goes without saying that these clubs do not like each other, and Liverpool would love nothing more than to take a huge step towards lifting the trophy with a win in the rivalry match. And considering that Everton hasn’t beaten Liverpool since 2010, you could easily understand why Liverpool should and could win this match. However, six of the last seven Merseyside Derbies at Goodison park have ended all square, including three of the last five ending scoreless, and four of the last five ending under 2.5 goals. While Everton won’t have home support for this match, I think we see a cautious yet scrappy affair here and I think the two sides cancel out once again. I’ll take the draw here as well as the under 2.5 goals as my main bets. I’ll also sprinkle a bit on the correct score of 0-0 and 1-1 for +1200 and +650 respectively at time of posting
Chris’s Pick Draw +315 / Under 2.5 Goals +120
