Aston Villa (DLLLL) and Chelsea (WWDLW) will meet on Sunday, June 21st for an English Premier League (EPL) match. The match is scheduled for an 11:15 AM EST start time and it will be played at Villa Park.
This will be the first match in the English Premier League for Chelsea since the break, but Aston Villa has already gotten a match in on Wednesday against Sheffield United.
Aston Villa should feel a mix between relieved and disappointed after its draw on Wednesday against Sheffield United. Yes, Aston Villa was overall the better team in all facets except possession, as Aston Villa had more total shots, shots on target, and corner kicks than Sheffield United in an almost 3:1 ratio in each stat. However, Aston Villa was bailed out big time when Sheffield United was denied an obvious goal due to poor referring. The "ghost goal" as it is being coined now, cost Sheffield the go-ahead and most likely winning goal in the match. Thus, both teams were kept off the score sheets in a 0-0 draw, and both teams earned a point in the standings.
Chelsea has not played an English Premier League match since March 8th (a 4-0 win over Everton). Chelsea sits at fourth in the English Premier League table, five points behind Leicester City (as the time of me writing this), and three points ahead of Manchester United. Chelsea earned back-to-back impressive shutout victories against some tough competition in Everton and Liverpool before the break, (Liverpool being in the English FA Cup). Chelsea owns the goal differential in this battle by 36 goals, as Aston Villa is a -22 and Chelsea is a +12.
The last time these two teams played against each other was on December 4th of 2019. That match resulted in a 2-1 Chelsea victory in front of its home supporters. Chelsea is a perfect 5-0-0 against Aston Villa in the last five matches these teams have played overall, so it is a fair assumption that Chelsea will be the major favorites in this match.
Although Aston Villa looked more impressive than I had thought they would be against Sheffield United, I have to take Chelsea -1.0 here. Chelsea is the stronger team in all facets of the game, and although they will have a disadvantage since Aston Villa was already given a match earlier this week, I trust in Chelsea's ability to overcome any rust they have early in the match.
