Bayer Leverkusen host FC Koln from the BayArena in Bundesliga soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.
Bayer Leverkusen come into this match in 4th place, sitting on 57 points with a record of 17 wins, 6 draws and 8 losses after a 1-1 draw with Schalke in their last match. In the draw against Schalke, the match was scoreless at the half, but Schalke would break through in the 51st minute from the penalty spot. The lead would hold until Schalke would concede an own goal with less than ten minutes to go and neither side would find the go-ahead goal to steal the points late. All of this despite Leverkusen holding a 67% possession advantage as well as 15 attempts at goal to Schalke’s 7 with a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Kai Havertz leads Leverkusen in scoring with 11 goals to go along with 5 assists while Kevin Volland has 9 goals and a team-high 7 assists on the year. Lukas Hradecky is the top goalkeeper for Bayer Leverkusen, conceding 1.29 goals per 90 minutes with 9 clean sheets in 31 league appearances this season.
FC Koln come into this one sitting in 12th place, sitting tied with Augsburg and Union Berlin on 35 points with a record of 10 wins, 5 draws and 16 losses after a 2-1 loss to Union in their last match. In the loss to Union Berlin that pushed Koln’s winless run to seven games, Koln fell behind six minutes before halftime and Union Berlin doubled their lead in the 67th minute. Jhon Cordoba pulled a goal back for Koln in the second minute of second half stoppage time, but it wasn’t enough as Union Berlin held on for the away win. Cordoba leads Koln in scoring with 13 goals on the year while Florian Kainz has a team-high 6 assists and Mark Uth has 5 goals and 5 assists. Timo Horn is Koln’s #1 goalkeeper, conceding 1.84 goals per 90 minutes with 6 clean sheets in 31 league appearances this season.
I considered Koln only because Leverkusen’s allowed the most goals in any team in the top six this season. However, the Billy Goats have also conceded the 5th most goals in the Bundesliga this season, allowing 59 goals, and have given up two goals or more in six of the seven games during this current winless run. Leverkusen’s given up four goals in two of their last four games, but they’ve also allowed one goal or less in every other game dating back to the end of February. I think this is a game where the solid Leverkusen defense shows up since they’re the only team with anything realistic to play for as Bayer’s trying to hold onto one of the Champions League spots for next season. The price on Bayer ML is steep, so I’ll side with Leverkusen to win and under 4.5 goals to get the wager down to plus money.
