Freiburg and Hertha Berlin square off in Bundesliga soccer action from the Schwarzwald-Stadion on Tuesday afternoon.
Freiburg enter this match on 42 points with a record of 11 wins, 9 draws and 11 losses after a 2-2 tie with VFL Wolfsburg in their last match. In the match with Wolfsburg, Freiburg fell behind 14 minutes in and it looked like Wolfsburg went 2-0 up before having a goal disallowed via VAR thanks to a missed offside ruling in the 23rd. Wolfsburg did take the 2-0 lead in the 27th from the penalty spot and had another goal disallowed from VAR after a missed handball saved Freiburg from conceding again. Lucas Holer pulled a goal back for Freiburg in the 43rd and Roland Sallai tied the game at two right after the half. Both sides had chances down the stretch, but ultimately the sides would settle for a sharing of the spoils. Nils Petersen leads Freiburg in scoring with 10 goals on the year while Vincenzo Grifo has a team-high 7 assists and Christian Gunter has 6 assists.
Hertha Berlin come into this one sitting on 38 points with a record of 10 wins, 8 draws and 13 losses after back-to-back defeats following a 4-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in their last appearance. In the loss to Frankfurt, Krzysztor Piatek gave Hertha the lead after just 24 minutes of play, but Dedryck Boyata would put Hertha Berlin down to ten men with his second yellow card in first half stoppage time. Frankfurt would come out firing in the second half, tying the game at one in the 51st and taking a 2-1 lead in the 62nd before adding a 3rd goal six minutes later and icing the win with a 4th goal in the 86th minute, sending a shell-shocked Hertha side back empty-handed. Dodi Lukebakio leads Hertha Berlin with 6 goals and 5 assists while Vedad Ibisevic has 5 goals on the year. Rune Jarstein is Hertha Berlin’s top goaltender, conceding 1.46 goals per 90 minutes with 8 clean sheets in 26 league appearances this season.
To be honest, this line makes no sense to me. Hertha may have won the first meeting this season, but Freiburg’s unbeaten in their last three matches at home against Hertha Berlin, and even if there’s no fans in the stands, Freiburg’s the only team with something realistic to play for as they have an outside chance at the Europa League spot in 6th. Freiburg’s 4 points out with three games to go, and Wolfsburg has a tough match against Borussia Monchengladbach. I also didn’t like how Hertha folded like a cheap lawn chair against Frankfurt in the second half of that game. Give me Freiburg to pick up a big three points at home in this one.
